Traditional Knowledge as the Foundation of Inclusive Academic and Native American Partnerships
This paper explores best practices for developing culturally responsive research by informing empirical and biomedical methods with traditional/Indigenous forms of knowledge (TK). Federally funded research in collaboration with Native American tribes faces a need to interface with cultural competency and tribal self-determination. These goals are often paired with a desire to integrate “Traditional Knowledge” and “Indigenous methods” in research.…
Medical School Civic Engagement During Covid-19
The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) serves the Milwaukee metro area, one of the most diverse and segregated urban areas in the United States. In the acute crisis phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, MCW’s Civic and Community Engagement (C/CE) efforts were leveraged to address community concerns around four key initiatives: (a) availability of personal protective equipment in community; (b) food and housing issues for homeless individuals; (c) the n…

Characterizing Current Attitudes and Practices for Human Subject Safety in Studies Involving Pupil Dilation
Standards in pupil dilation practices regarding the safety of human subjects are not present in vision research despite the potential for significant adverse effects. We developed two surveys to examine current practices around pupil dilation among vision researchers and individuals associated with oversight of human subjects research. While both groups note an absence of adverse events associated with pupil dilation, vision researcher practices …
The Real-Time IRB
Lengthy review times for institutional review boards (IRBs) are a well-known barrier to research. In response to numerous calls to reduce review times, we devised "Real-Time IRB," a process that drastically reduces IRB review time. In this, investigators and study staff attend the IRB meeting and make changes to the protocol while the IRB continues its meeting, so that final approval can be issued at the meeting. This achieved an overall reductio…
