It’s Possible and There’s People Doing It Now”
While medicalized interventions for mental health crises, especially those involving police or other carceral institutions, have been broadly criticized, there is limited implementation of non-medicalized community-based alternatives to emergency crisis care. The purpose of this study was to provide pilot research into the underlying logic and principles of non-carceral approaches to emergency mental health care, looking specifically at the motiv…
Fight the patriarchy? Get rich! 'Financial feminism' as feminist neoliberalism
The 'financial feminism' movement invites us to fight patriarchy by 'believing in the financial equality of women', increasing our financial literacy, and investing according to principles of sustainability and impact. In this paper we adopt Barad, Karen. 2007. Meeting the Universe Halfway: Quantum Physics and the Entanglement of Matter and Meaning. Durham and London: Duke University Press new materialist ontology of agential realism to arg…
A confusion of tongues
Discussions of treatment and recovery from child sexual abuse often focus on the therapeutic aspects of speech and witness. Using concepts from Lacanian theory and from Sandor Ferenczi’s account of child sexual trauma, this article argues that speech and witness are not, in themselves, sufficient to facilitate recovery. While misogyny and violence are embedded within the available symbolic contexts within which survivors must attempt to recover, …
Psychiatrization of Resistance
This article examines contemporary examples of psychiatrization as a tool of disciplinary control and repression, focusing on new research on the co-option of consumer/survivor/ex-patient movements within the Global South. Here, we understand psychiatrization as (1) the process of imposing certain interpretive limits on states of difference and distress and (2) the conceptualization of treatment and recovery through the teleological notion of nor…
