  • MDMA-Assisted Therapy for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Mixed-Methods Case Study of a Participant of Color From an Open-Label Trial

    Open Access•Terence H W Ching, M T Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Humanistic Psychology•2024•References: 46

MDMA (±3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine)-assisted therapy (MDMA-AT) was shown in previous clinical trials to have promising efficacy and safety for alleviating treatment-resistant posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, due to low ethnoracial diversity, the question remains as to whether ethnoracial minority participants would benefit similarly. Thus, a mixed-methods case study was conducted on a participant of color from an open-label tr…

  • Pilot study suggests DNA methylation of the glucocorticoid receptor gene (NR3C1) is associated with MDMA-assisted therapy treatment response for severe PTSD

Open Access•Candace R Lewis, Joseph Tafur et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

The findings of this study suggest that therapy-related PTSD symptom improvements may be related to DNA methylation changes in HPA genes and such changes may be greater in those receiving MDMA-assisted therapy. These findings can be used to generate hypothesis driven analyses for future studies with larger cohorts

  • Altered brain activity and functional connectivity after MDMA-assisted therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder

Open Access•S Parker Singleton, Julie B Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

    https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02102802, identifier NCT02102802

  • MDMA-assisted therapy is associated with a reduction in chronic pain among people with post-traumatic stress disorder

    Open Access•Devon Christie, Berra Yazar‐Klosinski et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Findings demonstrate a high prevalence of chronic pain in this sample of people with severe PTSD and that chronic pain scores among medium and high pain subgroups were significantly lower following MDMA-AT. While these data are preliminary, when considered alongside the frequency of comorbid chronic pain and PTSD and promising efficacy of MDMA-AT for treating PTSD, these findings encourage further research exploring the role of MDMA-AT for chroni…

  • MDMA-assisted therapy for severe PTSD: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 3 study

    Open Access•Jennifer M Mitchell, Michael P Bogenschutz et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Medicine•2021

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) presents a major public health problem for which currently available treatments are modestly effective. We report the findings of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-site phase 3 clinical trial (NCT03537014) to test the efficacy and safety of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)-assisted therapy for the treatment of patients with severe PTSD, including those with common comorbidities suc…

  • Scaling Up: Multisite Open-Label Clinical Trials of MDMA-Assisted Therapy for Severe Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

    Open Access•Julie B Wang, Jessica Lin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Humanistic Psychology•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 29

Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating mental health condition associated with serious adverse health outcomes and functional impairment. Previous MDMA–assisted therapy (MDMA-AT) studies have shown promising results in single site studies. Two open-label studies tested this modality in multisite clinical trials to assess the feasibility of scaling this manualized therapy across 14 North American sites. Method: Cotherap…

  • Safety and Efficacy of Lysergic Acid Diethylamide-Assisted Psychotherapy for Anxiety Associated With Life-threatening Diseases

Open Access•Peter Gasser, Dominique Holstein et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Nervous and Mental…•2014

A double-blind, randomized, active placebo-controlled pilot study was conducted to examine safety and efficacy of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD)-assisted psychotherapy in 12 patients with anxiety associated with life-threatening diseases. Treatment included drug-free psychotherapy sessions supplemented by two LSD-assisted psychotherapy sessions 2 to 3 weeks apart. The participants received either 200 μg of LSD (n = 8) or 20 μg of LSD with an op…
