  • Documents on the Parian and the Building of Its Church in The 18th Century

    Regalado Trota Jose•ARTICLE•Philippiniana Sacra•2026

Much has been written about the Parian, the Chinese district outside the walls of Manila. Few archival sources have been consulted, where they can be located. Some materials have been cited from microfilm copies at the Archivo de la Universidad de Santo Tomás in Manila. For the present issue, we present transcriptions of selected documents on the Parian still conserved at the Archivo de la Provincia del Santo Rosario in the Santuario de Santo Cri…

  • (Ukkil Motifs on Church Bells in the Philippines, 1854-1896)

National Historical Commission of the Philippines, Regalado Trota Jose•ARTICLE•Philippiniana Sacra•2025

In the course of this author’s field research on church bells in the Philippines, a number of photographs of the crosses on the bells show the said crosses resting on bases that curiously resembled motifs related to the art of southern Philippine Islamized peoples. This art is collectively called ukkil (in the Sulu Archipelago) or okir (in many places in Mindanao). When tabulated, the data show that these bells were cast from about the middle of …

    Regalado Trota Jose•CHAPTER•2025

A series of documents from the Archives of the University of Santo Tomás in Manila tell of the attempt by one Luis Castilla, an indigenous Tagalog speaker and member of the local aristocracy or “principalía,” to sell various parcels of land. • The Lost Devotions to the Santo Niño in Northern Philippines (Abulug and Bangui)

Philippine National Historical Society, Regalado Trota Jose•ARTICLE•Philippiniana Sacra•2024

The devotion to the Santo Niño or Holy Child enjoys great popularity all over the Philippines, especially in the Visayas and Mindanao. However, it is not particularly noticeable in the northern provinces of the country. Curiously, the documents presented here show that there were strong Santo Niño devotions in the northernmost towns of the Ilocos and Cagayan provinces, specifically Bangui (Ilocos Norte) and Abulug (Cagayan), at least in the first…

This article proposes an early building history of the parish church (now cathedral) of Maasin, Southern Leyte, and its related structures. These are now found in various parts of the town, but within the bounds of two small rivers. The church is dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, whose early image of wood is the subject of the second part of this work. The statue, with large sections of its original polychromy intact, is one of the better pre…

  • The Scenes of the Life of Christ in the Virgen S. Mariano of 1623

Philippine National Historical Society, Regalado Trota Jose•ARTICLE•Philippiniana Sacra•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 3

There is a dearth of knowledge on the emergence of books with illustrations in the Philippines. In 1623, the Virgen S. Mariano was published in Binondo, containing images which were printed on individual slips of paper and then pasted on its pages. Such images may be classified as estampitas, which for Filipinos are pocket-sized cards with religious meaning. Since works printed before 1623 do not contain images of this format, the illustrations i…

  • An 18th Century Manual on Architecture

Regalado Trota Jose, Cheek Fadriquela•ARTICLE•Philippiniana Sacra•2022

The building of the Santo Niño church is a benchmark event for the study of Philippine architectural history. Apart from the happy fact that this building still stands, are two narratives written by its builder, Fray Juan Albarrán. This Augustinian was assigned as prior to the Cebu convent for two terms, 1735-1737, and 1737-1740. During this time, he planned, oversaw, and completed the rebuilding of the Santo Niño church. His narratives, “Adverte…

O n his deathbed on the feastday of the Assumption of Our Lady in 1654, Don Miguel Dipasouay prepared to die by dictating his will. 1 He accepts the sickness God has seen fit to keep him in bed, but he declares that he is of sound mind and will. He professes belief in the mystery of the Holy Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, three persons in one true God, without beginning nor end. He then calls on the Virgin Mary, his namesake saint, his

  • The Participation of the Local Clergy in late 18th Century Philippine Art

    Regalado Trota Jose•ARTICLE•Philippiniana Sacra•2021

Most Philippine church historical accounts were prepared by religious congregations, principally the Augustinians, Augustinian Recollects, Dominicans, Franciscans, and Jesuits. The majority of their members were Spaniards. As such, most of the churches and church art created during the Spanish colonial era are credited to them. In a way, such church art has suffered from a certain odium in that they are "reminders of foreign friar oppression. " T…

    Regalado Trota Jose•ARTICLE•Philippiniana Sacra•2021

In commemorating anniversaries of institutions, it is always good to recognize the tangible aspects that were produced by these institutions. The objects or buildings award a certain rootedness of an institution in the place it has worked in. Thus, the present study was made in line with the 50th anniversary of the Dominican Province of the Philippines and the 500th anniversary of the coming of Christianity to the Philippines.
