Relationship Between Personality Measures and Perceived Mental Fatigability
Lower conscientiousness, optimism, and higher goal reengagement were linked with more severe perceived mental fatigability in older men. Personality traits may potentially contribute to early risk assessment for fatigability in later life. Future work should be longitudinal in nature and include personality assessments to confirm the temporality of the relationships observed
Social Participation Modifies the Effect of a Structured Physical Activity Program on Major Mobility Disability Among Older Adults
Our findings suggest that baseline social participation is an important factor for the success of a PA intervention aimed at delaying mobility disability
Socioeconomic differences in the benefits of structured physical activity compared with health education on the prevention of major mobility disability in older adults
BACKGROUND: Evidence is lacking on whether health-benefiting community-based interventions differ in their effectiveness according to socioeconomic characteristics. We evaluated whether the benefit of a structured physical activity intervention on reducing mobility disability in older adults differs by education or income. METHODS: The Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders (LIFE) study was a multicentre, randomised trial that compar…
Age Validation in the Long Life Family Study Through a Linkage to Early-Life Census Records
It is possible to match a high fraction of older study participants to their early-life census records when detailed information is available on participants' family of origin. Such record linkage can provide an important source of information for evaluating age reporting among the oldest old participants. Our results are consistent with recent studies suggesting that age reporting among older whites in the United States appears to be quite good
Physical Activity in Prefrail Older Adults
We examined the hypothesis that physical activity will have favorable effects on measures of self-efficacy for a 400-m walk and satisfaction with physical functioning in older adults 70+ years of age who have deficits in mobility. We randomized a total of 412 adults aged 70-89 years at elevated risk for mobility disability to either a physical activity or a successful aging educational control intervention for 12 months. Participants in the physi…
Decline in Physical Activity in Black Girls and White Girls during Adolescence
BACKGROUND: Physical activity declines during adolescence, but the underlying reasons remain unknown. METHODS: We prospectively followed 1213 black girls and 1166 white girls enrolled in the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Growth and Health Study from the ages of 9 or 10 to the ages of 18 or 19 years. We used a validated questionnaire to measure leisure-time physical activity on the basis of metabolic equivalents (MET) for reported acti…
