Routine Life-Course Health Records in Infancy Predict Being Overweight in Childhood and Adolescence: The TMM BirThree Cohort Study
Background/Objectives : Being overweight in childhood is a strong predictor of later obesity and related health disorders, underscoring the importance of the early identification of at-risk children. The aim of this study was to develop a prediction model for being overweight across childhood and adolescence using routine life-course health records available up to 18-23 months of age. Methods : We analyzed 1581 participants from the Tohoku Medica…
Degree of housing damage caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake and all-cause mortality in the community-based cohort study of the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project
BACKGROUND: Natural disasters may have negative health effects on survivors. However, long-term observations on this are lacking. Therefore, this study investigated the association between the degree of housing damage caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE) and all-cause mortality using the data from the cohort study conducted by the Tohoku Medical Megabank (TMM) Project in disaster-stricken areas. METHODS: The community-based cohort stu…
Association of physiological factors with grip and leg extension strength: Tohoku medical megabank community-based cohort study
Grip and leg extension strength demonstrated similar associations with anthropometry, pulmonary function, and estimated glomerular filtration rate, but the associations with the other factors were not always consistent
Similarities in cardiometabolic risk factors among random male-female pairs: A large observational study in Japan
In this study, few similarities in cardiometabolic risk factors were noted among the random male-female pairs. As spouse pairs may share environmental factors, intervention strategies targeting lifestyle habits and preventing lifestyle-related diseases may be effective
Association between the social isolation and depressive symptoms after the great East Japan earthquake: Findings from the baseline survey of the TMM CommCohort study
The findings suggested that a combination of social isolation and severe house damage and the death of family members caused by a large-scale natural disaster was associated with a higher risk of depressive symptoms although the interaction was not statistically significant
Impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake on the Employment Status and Mental Health Conditions of Affected Coastal Communities
The Great East Japan Earthquake devasted the old community in coastal areas characterized by primary industry. The number of unemployed people increased from 150,000 to 190,000 after the earthquake. All of the adult residents of Shichigahama (18 years old or older), located in the coastal area of the Miyagi prefecture, whose houses were totally or majorly damaged, were recruited for a survey conducted in October 2011. All of the residents who res…
Population Attributable Fraction of Smoking and Metabolic Syndrome on Cardiovascular Disease Mortality in Japan: A 15-Year Follow Up of Nippon Data90
Our results indicated that a large proportion of excess CVD deaths was observed in smokers without metabolic syndrome or obesity, especially in men. These findings suggest that intervention targeting on smokers, irrespective of the presence of metabolic syndrome, is still important for the prevention of CVD in Asian countries
Fruit and vegetable consumption and risk of colorectal cancer in Japan: The Miyagi Cohort Study
Objective Adequate fruit and vegetable intake has been suggested to protect against colorectal cancer. However, several recent prospective studies have reported no association. We therefore examined the association between fruit and vegetable intakes and the risk of colorectal cancer in a prospective cohort study in Japan. Design Between June and August 1990, 47 605 Japanese men and women completed a self-administered questionnaire, including a f…
