Depressive symptoms among Mexican adolescent girls in relation to iron status, anaemia, body weight and pubertal status
Objective: The study examined the association between depressive symptoms and iron status, anaemia, body weight and pubertal status among Mexican adolescent girls. Design: In this cross-sectional study, depressive symptoms were assessed by the 6-item Kutcher Adolescent Depression Scale, and latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify and characterise groups of girls based on depressive symptoms. Iron status and inflammation were assessed usi…
Trends and factors associated with the nutritional status of adolescent girls in Ghana
Objective: We examined the trends over time and the factors associated with malnutrition among adolescent girls in Ghana. Design: Cross-sectional analysis from 3 nationwide Ghana Demographic and Health Surveys conducted in 2003 ( n 983), 2008 ( n 955) and 2014 ( n 857). We used Cox proportional hazard models with sample weighting to model the prevalence ratio (PR) of malnutrition. Setting: Countrywide, covering rural and urban areas in Ghana. Par…
Exposure to aflatoxins and fumonisins and linear growth of children in rural Ethiopia
Objective: We hypothesise that exposure to aflatoxins and fumonisins, measured in serum, alters protein synthesis, reducing serum protein and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), increasing inflammation and infection, leading to child’s linear growth failure. Design: Children 6–35 months, stratified by baseline stunting, were subsampled from an intervention trial on quality protein maize consumption and evaluated at two time-points. Setting: Blo…
Development and external validation of the ‘Flower-FFQ’
Objective: FFQ assess habitual dietary intake and are relatively inexpensive to process, but may take up to 60 min to complete. This article describes the validation of the Flower-FFQ, which consists of four short FFQ measuring the intake of energy and macronutrients or specific (micro)nutrients/foods that can be merged into one complete daily assessment using predefined algorithms. Design: Participants completed the Flower-FFQ and validated regu…
Using enhanced regression calibration to combine dietary intake estimates from 24 h recall and FFQ reduces bias in diet–disease associations
Objective: To illustrate the impact of combining 24 h recall (24hR) and FFQ estimates using regression calibration (RC) and enhanced regression calibration (ERC) on diet–disease associations. Setting: Wageningen area, the Netherlands, 2011–2013. Design: Five approaches for obtaining self-reported dietary intake estimates of protein and K were compared: (i) uncorrected FFQ intakes (FFQ); (ii) uncorrected average of two 24hR ( $\overline {\rm R}$ )…
How full is your glass? Portion sizes of wine, fortified wine and straight spirits at home in the Netherlands
Objective Alcohol consumption may be wrongly estimated because of inaccurate information on actual portion sizes. We compared portion sizes of wine, fortified wine and straight spirits poured at home with the Dutch standard drink sizes. Design Participants measured portion sizes of wine, fortified wine and straight spirits at home up to a maximum of three times and reported these via an online survey. Average portion sizes (in millilitres) were c…
A national FFQ for the Netherlands (the FFQ-NL1.0)
The FFQ-NL1.0 was compatible with other FFQs regarding energy and macronutrient intake. However, compatibility for covered variance of intake was limited for some of the micronutrients. If implemented in existing cohorts, it is advised to administer the old and the new FFQ in combination to derive calibration factors
Development and evaluation of the Dutch Healthy Diet index 2015
Objective To update the Dutch Healthy Diet index, a measure of diet quality, to reflect adherence to the Dutch dietary guidelines 2015 and to evaluate against participants’ characteristics and nutrient intakes with the score based on 24 h recall (24 hR) data and FFQ data. Design The Dutch Healthy Diet index 2015 (DHD15-index) consists of fifteen components representing the fifteen food-based Dutch dietary guidelines of 2015. Per component the sco…
Effectiveness of the MetSLIM lifestyle intervention targeting individuals of low socio-economic status and different ethnic origins with elevated waist-to-height ratio
Objective To evaluate whether the lifestyle intervention MetSLIM targeting individuals of low socio-economic status of Turkish, Moroccan and Dutch origin was successful in improving waist circumference and other cardiometabolic risk factors, lifestyle behaviour and quality of life. Design A quasi-experimental intervention study (Netherlands Trial Register NTR3721). The intervention group participated in a 12-month combined dietary and physical ac…
BMI was found to be a consistent determinant related to misreporting of energy, protein and potassium intake using self-report and duplicate portion methods
Objective As misreporting, mostly under-reporting, of dietary intake is a generally known problem in nutritional research, we aimed to analyse the association between selected determinants and the extent of misreporting by the duplicate portion method (DP), 24 h recall (24hR) and FFQ by linear regression analysis using the biomarker values as unbiased estimates. Design For each individual, two DP, two 24hR, two FFQ and two 24 h urinary biomarkers…
Process evaluation of a randomised controlled trial of a diabetes prevention intervention in Dutch primary health care
Objective To investigate (i) how the SLIMMER intervention was delivered and received in Dutch primary health care and (ii) how this could explain intervention effectiveness. Design A randomised controlled trial was conducted and subjects were randomly allocated to the intervention (10-month combined dietary and physical activity intervention) or the control group. A process evaluation including quantitative and qualitative methods was conducted. …

Using the intervention mapping protocol to develop a maintenance programme for the SLIMMER diabetes prevention intervention
The Intervention Mapping protocol provided a useful framework to systematically plan a maintenance programme for the extensive SLIMMER intervention. The study showed that planning a maintenance programme can build on existing implementation structures of the extensive programme. Future research is needed to determine to what extent the maintenance programme contributes to sustained effects in participants of lifestyle interventions
Evaluation of using spot urine to replace 24 h urine sodium and potassium excretions
Objective The most accurate method to estimate Na and K intakes is to determine 24 h urinary excretions of these minerals. However, collecting 24 h urine is burdensome. Therefore it was studied whether spot urine could be used to replace 24 h urine samples. Design Participants collected 24 h urine and kept one voiding sample separate. Na, K and creatinine concentrations were analysed in both 24 h and spot urine samples. Also 24 h excretions of Na…
The use of predefined diet quality scores in the context of CVD risk during urbanization in the South African Prospective Urban and Rural Epidemiological (Pure) study
Objective Urbanization is generally associated with increased CVD risk and accompanying dietary changes. Little is known regarding the association between increased CVD risk and dietary changes using approaches such as diet quality. The relevance of predefined diet quality scores (DQS) in non-Western developing countries has not yet been established. Design The association between dietary intakes and CVD risk factors was investigated using two DQ…
Association of food-hygiene practices and diarrhea prevalence among Indonesian young children from low socioeconomic urban areas
Overall poor mother's food-hygiene practices did not contribute to the occurrence of diarrhea in Indonesian children. However, among children < 2 years from low socioeconomic urban areas they were associated with more diarrhea
Adapting the SLIM diabetes prevention intervention to a Dutch real-life setting
The positive result of this study is that a consensus was achieved within a relatively short time period (nine months) between the developers of the SLIM intervention and local health care professionals on the adaptations needed to make SLIM applicable in a Dutch real-life setting. Our example shows that it is possible to combine the perspectives of scientists and practitioners, and to find a balance between evidence-base and applicability concer…
Prevalence of self-reported finger deformations and occupational risk factors among professional cooks
Among the school lunch workers studied, women had a higher prevalence of finger deformations on all joints of both hands. Various cooking tasks were associated with the prevalence of finger deformations. The results suggest that improvements in working conditions are important for preventing work-related disorders such as finger deformations
Nationwide shifts in the double burden of overweight and underweight in Vietnamese adults in 2000 and 2005
The double nutrition burden was clearly present in Vietnam. The distribution of BMI across the population groups generally indicated a shift towards higher BMI levels in 2005 as compared to 2000. The prevalence of overweight was increased while the declined level of undernutrition was still high in 2005. The shifts of underweight to overweight were most obvious among population groups with higher food expenditure levels
Abdominal obesity and the prevalence of diabetes and intermediate hyperglycaemia in Chinese adults
Objective To assess the association of indicators of general and abdominal obesity with the prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and intermediate hyperglycaemia (IHG) in the Chinese population. Methods We used data of 50 905 adults aged 18–79 years in the 2002 China National Nutrition and Health Survey. Recommended Chinese cut-off values were used for BMI (24 kg/m 2 ) and waist circumference (WC; 85 cm in men, 80 cm in women). Optimal cut-offs fo…
