Quanhe Yang, Zefeng Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Internal Medicine•2014

  • Associations of Maternal Age- and Parity-Related Factors With Trends in Low-Birthweight Rates

Quanhe Yang, Sander Greenland et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2006•Cited by: 5•References: 26

Objectives. We assessed the effects of changes in the maternal age–parity distribution and age-and parity-specific low-birthweight rates on low-birthweight trends in the United States. Methods. We used natality file data from 1980 through 2000 to assess very-low-birthweight and low-birthweight rates among singleton live-born infants. Results. Changes in age-and parity-specific low-birthweight rates were the main contributor to the overall trend i…

We thank Schempf and Becker for pointing out a deficiency in our presentation, although we disagree with their solution. In fact, we were aware of the alternative standards they cite and rejected them as inappropriate. Although researchers are often taught otherwise, the choice of standard distributions is not arbitrary and should not be based on symmetry or other mathematical considerations. Rather, the choice of standard distribution should be …

  • Occupational Attainments of Rural to Urban Temporary Economic Migrants in China, 1985–1990

    Open Access•Quanhe Yang, Fei Guo•ARTICLE•International Migration Review•1996•Cited by: 17•References: 10

Since the inauguration of reform in 1978, a large number of Chinese peasants were released from agricultural production and became “surplus labor.” Because a large proportion of rural-urban population mobility assumes the form of temporary movement, attention to such movement is therefore essential to any assessment of social, economic and political changes in urban and rural China and of the overall urbanization process. The present study uses t…

  • Age at Marriage and the First Birth Interval

Wang Feng, Feng Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Population and Development Review•1996•Cited by: 25

The authors argue that marriage was affected by government policy in China and that the shortened first birth interval was not simply compensating behavior for later marriage. The shorter birth interval is also attributed to broad social changes. First births are identified as births resulting from a conception before marriage and after marriage. Data are obtained among a 10% subsample (34278 ever married women aged 15-57 years and married during…

  • Age at first marriage and fertility in rural Anhui, China

    Open Access•Quanhe Yang•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1990

This paper examines the changing nuptiality pattern of rural China, particularly rural Anhui in relation to the planned social changes since 1949 and their effect on fertility. The data are from the 1/1000 Fertility Survey of China, conducted by the Family Planning Commission in 1982. Before the family planning programme was introduced to rural Anhui (1972), the changing nuptiality pattern was indirectly affected by the planned social changes; af…

  • Fertility and some determinants of fertility decline in Huaibei Plain, Anhui province, China, 1982

    Open Access•Quanhe Yang•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1987

This paper examines the level and trend of fertility in Huaibei Plain, Anhui province, China, since 1950 and considers some determinants of fertility decline. The data used are from the 1/1000 survey of China which was conducted by the Family Planning Commission in 1982. Fertility decline among younger women (aged under 30) is largely due to later age at marriage, the marriage pattern of Huaibei Plain having changed from early and universal marri…
