  • Beyond Recreational Physical Activity

Stephanie M George, Melinda L Irwin et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 48

Objectives. We prospectively examined nonrecreational physical activity and sedentary behavior in relation to breast cancer risk among 97 039 postmenopausal women in the National Institutes of Health–AARP Diet and Health Study. Methods. We identified 2866 invasive and 570 in situ breast cancer cases recorded between 1996 and 2003 and used Cox proportional hazards regression to estimate multivariate relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence interval…

  • Predictors of Sustained Smoking Cessation

Erik Augustson, Erik M Augustson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 33

Objectives. Because US smoking rates have not declined during the past decade, there is a renewed need to identify factors associated with smoking cessation. Using a nested case–control design, we explored the association between ability to sustain cessation over an extended period and demographic, smoking, medical, and behavioral variables. Methods. We selected a sample of 1379 sustained quitters (abstinent from smoking for at least 40 months) a…

  • Incidence of cataract operations in Finnish male smokers unaffected by alpha tocopherol or beta carotene supplements

    J M Teikari, Matti Rautalahti et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1998•Cited by: 6•References: 19

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of alpha tocopherol and beta carotene supplementation on the incidence of age related cataract extraction. SETTING: The Alpha-tocopherol Beta-carotene (ATBC) Study was a randomised, double blind, placebo controlled, 2 x 2 factorial trial conducted in south western Finland. The cataract surgery study population of 28,934 male smokers 50-69 years of age at the start. INTERVENTION: Random assignment to one of four re…

  • Physical activity and risk of cancer in the NHANES I population

Demetrius Albanes, A Blair et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1989•Cited by: 3•References: 12

We studied the relation between self-reported physical activity and cancer in the first National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES I) cohort, originally examined between 1971-75, and followed prospectively through the Epidemiologic Follow-up Study (NHEFS), conducted between 1982-84. Among 5,138 men and 7,407 women 25-74 years old, for nonrecreational activity we observed increased risk of cancer among inactive individuals compared t…

  • Bowel function and breast cancer in US women

    Marc S Micozzi, C L Carter et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1989•Cited by: 1•References: 20

We studied bowel function in relation to 123 breast cancer cases among 7,702 women from the US NHANES I Epidemiologic Follow-up Study. Results suggest a slight increased risk of breast cancer for both decreased frequency of bowel movements (relative risk = 1.5, 95% confidence interval = 0.8, 2.7) and firm stool consistency (RR = 1.8, 95% CI = 1.0, 3.2.) These observations are consistent with an hypothesized association between constipation and in…

  • Associations between smoking and body weight in the US population

Demetrius Albanes, D Yvonne Jones et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1987•Cited by: 39•References: 22

Recent recommendations for increases in desirable body weights are based upon studies which did not consider the potential confounding effect of cigarette consumption on body weight. We investigated the relation between tobacco use and several anthropometric measurements in 12,103 men and women 19-74 years of age in the United States examined between 1976 and 1980 during the Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES II). Cig…
