  • Molecular epidemiology of Sars-CoV-2 in Northern South Africa

Open Access•Lisa Arrah Mbang Tambe, Phindulo Mathobo et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Introduction: Wastewater-based genomic surveillance of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) provides a comprehensive approach to characterize evolutionary patterns and distribution of viral types in a population. This study documents the molecular epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2, in Northern South Africa, from January 2021 to May 2022. Methodology: A total of 487 wastewater samples were collected from the influent of eight wast…

  • Influences on catch-up growth using relative versus absolute metrics

    Open Access•Stephanie A Richard, Benjamin J J Mccormick et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

The study children demonstrated improved growth from 24 to 60 months of age, but only a subset had positive changes in HAD and WAD. The same environmental factors were associated with growth from 24 to 60 months regardless of metric used (change in HAZ or HAD, or WAZ and WAD)

  • Not water, sanitation and hygiene practice, but timing of stunting is associated with recovery from stunting at 24 months

Open Access•Subhasish Das, Shah Mohammad Fahim et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2021

Objectives: To measure the role of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) practices on recovery from stunting and assess the role of timing of stunting on the reversal of this phenomenon Design: Data from the MAL-ED multi-country birth cohort study was used for the current analysis. Generalised linear mixed-effects models were used to estimate the probability of reversal of stunting with WASH practice and timing of stunting as the exposures of inte…

  • Factors associated with head circumference and indices of cognitive development in early childhood

Open Access•Laura Nicolaou, Tahmeed Ahmed et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2020

BACKGROUND: While head circumference (HC) has been related to intracranial volume and brain size, its association with cognitive function remains unclear. We sought to understand the relationship among various biological and socioeconomic risk factors, HC and cognitive development. METHODS: We analysed data across resource-poor settings in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Peru, South Africa and Tanzania from the Etiology, Risk Factors and Interactions o…

  • Pathogen-Specific Impacts of the 2011–2012 La Niña-Associated Floods on Enteric Infections in the MAL-ED Peru Cohort

Open Access•Josh M Colston, Josh Colston et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Extreme floods pose multiple direct and indirect health risks. These risks include contamination of water, food, and the environment, often causing outbreaks of diarrheal disease. Evidence regarding the effects of flooding on individual diarrhea-causing pathogens is limited, but is urgently needed in order to plan and implement interventions and prioritize resources before climate-related disasters strike. This study applied a causal inference ap…

  • Associations between Household-Level Exposures and All-Cause Diarrhea and Pathogen-Specific Enteric Infections in Children Enrolled in Five Sentinel Surveillance Studies

Open Access•Josh M Colston, Abu Syed Golam Faruque et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Diarrheal disease remains a major cause of childhood mortality and morbidity causing poor health and economic outcomes. In low-resource settings, young children are exposed to numerous risk factors for enteric pathogen transmission within their dwellings, though the relative importance of different transmission pathways varies by pathogen species. The objective of this analysis was to model associations between five household-level risk factors-w…

  • Psychosocial and environmental determinants of child cognitive development in rural south africa and tanzania

Open Access•Fabrizio Drago, Rebecca J Scharf et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

This study shows a stronger association with child cognitive development at 5 years of age for socioeconomic status compared to more proximal measures of psychosocial and environmental determinants. A better understanding of the role of these factors is needed to inform interventions aiming to alleviate the burden of compromised cognitive development for children in LMICs

  • Development of a pseudovirus assay and evaluation to screen natural products for inhibition of HIV-1 subtype C reverse transcriptase

Open Access•Lufuno Grace Mavhandu, Hua Cheng et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnopharmacology•2020

  • Perceptions of community-based field workers on the effect of a longitudinal biomedical research project on their sustainable livelihoods

Open Access•Christabelle S Moyo, Joseph Francis et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2017

The MAL-ED South Africa, biomedical research project, had positive effects on tangible and intangible assets that compose the sustainable livelihoods of community-based fieldworkers. However, the field workers expressed the need to acquire social skills to enable them carry out their duties more efficiently

  • Phenolic content distribution and antioxidant activities of Terminalia sericea Burch

Open Access•CP Anokwuru, IDI Ramaite et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of Traditional…•2015

Background: Terminalia sericea has been used traditionally for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress. This study was aimed at determining the distribution of phenols in the leaves, stem bark and root bark of Terminalia sericea and their antioxidant activity.Materials and methods: Hot and cold water, methanol/acetone extracts were evaluated for their total phenolic content (TPC), flavone/flavonol content (FFC), flavonone/dihyd…

  • The Preliminary Assessment of Anti-Microbial Activity of Hplc Separated Components of Kirkia Wilmsii

Open Access•Kayini Chigayo, PEL Mojapelo et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of Traditional…•2014

BACKGROUND: Most communities in developing countries rely on traditional medicines for the treatment of diseases. In South Africa, the Limpopo province, within the Lebowakgomo district, uses tuberous roots of Kirkia wilmsii, after infusion in water for the treatment of a wide range of diseases by Sotho communities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The main objective of the study was to assess the anti-microbial activity of separated aqueous components of t…

  • Inhibitory properties of selected South African medicinal plants against Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Open Access•Ezekiel Green, Amidou Samie et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnopharmacology•2010

  • Evaluation of selected South African medicinal plants for inhibitory properties against human immunodeficiency virus type 1 reverse transcriptase and integrase

Open Access•Pascal Bessong, Pascal Obong Bessong et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnopharmacology•2005
