Association of social support and religiosity with survival among women with breast cancer in a low-income population in the Southeastern United States
A large social support network and regular attendance at faith-based services were associated with better survival among women with breast cancer. This calls for incorporating appropriate interventions to cancer care such as social support groups to improve survival
Cigarette smoking and oral microbiota in low-income and African-American populations
Background Cigarette smoking is a common risk factor for diseases and cancers. Oral microbiota is also associated with diseases and cancers. However, little is known about the impact of cigarette smoking on the oral microbiota, especially among ethnic minority populations. Methods We investigated cigarette smoking in relationship with the oral microbiota in a large population of predominately low-income and African-American participants. Mouth ri…
Level of moderate-intensity leisure-time physical activity and reduced mortality in middle-aged and elderly Chinese
Regular participation in moderate-intensity LTPA was associated with reduced mortality, particularly CVD mortality, even when the LTPA was below the minimum level recommended by current guidelines. Increasing the amount of moderate-intensity LTPA was associated with further risk reduction up to a potential threshold of 3-5 times the recommended minimum
Dietary selenium intake and mortality in two population-based cohort studies of 133 957 Chinese men and women
Objective To investigate the potential influence of dietary Se intake on mortality among Chinese populations. Design We prospectively evaluated all-cause, CVD and cancer mortality risks associated with dietary Se intake in participants of the Shanghai Women’s Health Study (SWHS) and the Shanghai Men’s Health study (SMHS). Dietary Se intake was assessed by validated FFQ during in-person interviews. Cox proportional hazards models were used to calc…
Correlates of self-reported dietary cruciferous vegetable intake and urinary isothiocyanate from two cohorts in China
Objective To assess correlations between cruciferous vegetable intake and urinary isothiocyanate (ITC) level, in addition to glutathione S -transferase ( GST ) genotypes and other individual factors. Design The study included cohort participants whose urinary ITC levels had been previously ascertained. Urinary ITC was assessed using HPLC. Usual dietary intake of cruciferous vegetables was assessed using a validated FFQ and total dietary ITC intak…
Cholelithiasis and the risk of liver cancer: Results from cohort studies of 134 546 Chinese men and women
BACKGROUND: Cholelithiasis and cholecystectomy have been proposed as risk factors for liver cancer, but findings have been inconsistent. We assessed this association using data from the Shanghai Women's and Men's Health Studies. METHODS: History of cholelithiasis and cholecystectomy were reported at baseline and follow-up interviews, and liver cancer diagnoses were ascertained from the Shanghai Cancer Registry and Vital Statistics Unit. Adjusted …
O1-6.1 The Shanghai women's and men's health studies
Rapid economic developments accompanied by environmental and lifestyle changes over the last 3 decades in China have resulted in dramatic increases in the incidence of chronic diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. As a result, cancer and cardiovascular disease are two of the leading causes of death in China. This change in disease spectrum presents an enormous challenge to public health practitioners and policy makers in designing c…
Patterns and correlates of physical activity: A cross-sectional study in urban Chinese women
This study demonstrates that physical activity domains other than sports and exercise are important contributors to total energy expenditure in women. Correlates of physical activity are domain-specific. These findings provide important information for research on the health benefits of physical activity and have public health implications for designing interventions to promote participation in physical activity
Sources of variation in nutrient intakes among men in Shanghai, China
Background and objective Random errors, from any source, will attenuate epidemiological risk estimates. Before we launched the Shanghai Men's Health Study (SMHS), a large population-based cohort study investigating the diet–cancer association among Chinese men, a dietary calibration study was conducted among 96 men aged 40–75 years (mean age 56.5 years), with biweekly 24-hour dietary recalls (24HDRs) implemented over a 1-year period. Data from th…
Maternal leisure-time exercise and timely delivery
OBJECTIVES: This study investigated whether, in a general obstetric population, exercise in pregnancy affects the timeliness of delivery. The hypothesis was that maternal exercise would not raise the risk of preterm birth. METHODS: A community cohort of 557 prenatal patients was followed up until the time of delivery. Data were collected on exercise in each trimester: none, low-moderate ( or = 1000 kcal/wk). Timely delivery was adopted as an outc…
HIV-1 seroconversion and risk behaviors among young men in the US army. The Seroconversion Risk Factor Study Group
OBJECTIVES. This study sought to examine risk factors associated with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) seroconversion among active-duty men in the US Army. METHODS. One hundred twenty-eight men with documented HIV-1 seroconversion between 1988 and 1991 were matched to control subjects on demographic variables. Risk factor information was collected for the seroconversion period. RESULTS. Forty-nine case subjects and no control subjects …
