  • Incidental sun exposures as a source of sunburn among rural compared to urban residents in the United States

    Open Access•Patricia I Jewett, Carrie Henning‐smith et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2023

PURPOSE: Melanoma incidence is higher in rural than in urban areas in the United States, possibly due to greater incidental sun exposures from rural outdoor-focused lifestyles and occupational patterns. Our aim was to compare activities at the time of a sunburn between rural and urban residents. METHODS: Utilizing the nationally representative 2019 cross-sectional Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS), we report odds ratios (OR) and c…

  • Life-Course Transitions in Rural Residence and Old-Age Mortality in Iowa, 1930–2014

Open Access•Evan Roberts, Wendy M Rahn et al.•ARTICLE•RSF The Russell Sage Foundation…•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 16

Early-life conditions are associated with mortality in men, but not studied to the same extent in women. We add new evidence by studying a cohort of women born between 1916 and 1931 and followed for mortality between 1986 and 2013. Our sample from Iowa includes a significant number of rural women, from both farms and small towns. The long-term effects of growing up in a rural area were mixed: farmers' daughters lived longer than women growing up …

  • Developing and Testing Message Strategies to Reduce Indoor Tanning

Amy B Jordan, Amy Bleakley et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Health Behavior•2020

Objectives: Indoor tanning, which is most common among 18-25-year-old white women, increases the risk of skin cancer. To address this problem, we developed and tested messages with a national sample of indoor tanners to determine beliefs that would encourage them to quit. Methods: Messages discouraging indoor tanning using different persuasive themes (skin cancer risk, appearance risk, well-being enhancement) were developed based on formative res…

  • Comparison of quality of life among long-term melanoma survivors and non-melanoma controls: A cross-sectional study

Open Access•Rachel I Vogel, Lori Strayer et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2017

  • The reciprocal relationships between changes in adolescent perceived prevalence of smoking in movies and progression of smoking status

Kelvin Choi, Jean Forster et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2011

Perceived exposure to movie smoking primarily influenced teenagers' smoking behaviour at younger ages. If future studies confirm this finding, developing and evaluating interventions to improve young teenagers' resistance to these images may complement policies to reduce smoking in movies to reduce prevalence of adolescent smoking

  • Effectiveness of a Worksite Intervention to Reduce an Occupational Exposure: The Minnesota Wood Dust Study

DeAnn Lazovich, David L Parker et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2002•Cited by: 1•References: 31

Objectives. This study assessed the effectiveness of an intervention to reduce wood dust, a carcinogen, by approximately 26% in small woodworking businesses. Methods. We randomized 48 businesses to an intervention (written recommendations, technical assistance, and worker training) or comparison (written recommendations alone) condition. Changes from baseline in dust concentration, dust control methods, and worker behavior were compared between t…

  • A Pilot Study to Evaluate a Tobacco Diversion Program

DeAnn Lazovich, Janet Ford et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2001•Cited by: 1•References: 2

By 1998, 42 states had implemented legislation to prohibit the purchase, possession, or use of tobacco by minors, a 24% increase since 1995.1,2 In response, communities have developed tobacco education classes, known as tobacco diversion programs, offered in lieu of, or in addition to, other penalties for youths cited for tobacco use. Despite the proliferation of these programs, little is known about their effect on youths' tobacco use. Since Sep…
