  • Data on Determinants Are Needed to Curb the Sedentary Epidemic in Europe. Lessons Learnt from the Dedipac European Knowledge Hub

Open Access•Marieke De Craemer, Sébastien Chastin et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Societal and technological changes have resulted in sitting being the dominant posture during most activities of daily living, such as learning, working, travelling and leisure time. Too much time spent in seated activities, referred to as sedentary behaviour, is a novel concern for public health as it is one of the key lifestyle causes of poor health. The European DEDIPAC (Determinants of Diet and Physical Activity) Knowledge Hub coordinated the…

  • A massive geographically weighted regression model of walking-environment relationships

Open Access•T Feuillet, Hadrien Commenges et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Transport Geography•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 5

  • Neighborhood educational disparities in active commuting among women: The effect of distance between the place of residence and the place of work/study (an Acti-Cités study)

    Open Access•Camille Perchoux, Julie-Anne Nazare et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2017

Our results suggest that neighborhood educational disparities in active commuting tend to increase with commuting distance among women. Further research is needed to provide geographically driven guidance for health promotion intervention aiming at reducing disparities in active transportation among socioeconomic groups

  • Built environmental correlates of cycling for transport across Europe

    Open Access•Lieze Mertens, Sofie Compernolle et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Place•2017•Cited by: 6•References: 2

This cross-sectional study aimed to determine which objective built environmental factors, identified using a virtual neighbourhood audit, were associated with cycling for transport in adults living in five urban regions across Europe. The moderating role of age, gender, socio-economic status and country on these associations was also investigated. Overall, results showed that people living in neighbourhoods with a preponderance of speed limits b…

  • Home and Work Physical Activity Environments: Associations with Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Physical Activity Level in French Women

    Open Access•Jean-Michel Oppert, Marie-Aline Charles et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016

The influence of the physical activity environment in the home and at work on cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and objectively-measured physical activity has not been extensively studied. We recruited 147 women with a (mean ± SD) age of 54 ± 7 years and without evidence of chronic disease. The physical activity environment was assessed by self-report (Assessing Levels of PHysical Activity or ALPHA questionnaire), CRF using a submaximal step test, …

  • The associations between domain-specific sedentary behaviours and dietary habits in European adults: A cross-sectional analysis of the SPOTLIGHT survey

Open Access•Sofie Compernolle, Katrien De Cocker et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

Domain-specific sitting behaviours were related to unhealthy dietary behaviours. However, the small effect sizes suggest that individual level behavioural interventions focusing on sedentary behaviour will not be sufficient to improve dietary habits. The fact that almost none of the associations were moderated by age or gender suggests that these associations, and possibly also the effects of interventions targeting both behaviours, may hold acro…

  • Assessment of sedentary behaviors and transport-related activities by questionnaire: A validation study

Open Access•Keitly Mensah, Aurélia Maire et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

The STAQ showed acceptable reliability and a good ranking validity for assessment of context-specific SB and TRA. This instrument appears as a useful tool to study SB, TRA and PA in context in adults

  • Successful behavior change in obesity interventions in adults: A systematic review of self-regulation mediators

    Open Access•Pedro J Teixeira, Eliana V Carraça et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Medicine•2015

  • Descriptive study of sedentary behaviours in 35,444 French working adults: Cross-sectional findings from the Acti-Cités study

Open Access•Madina Saidj, Mehdi Menai et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

A substantial amount of waking hours was spent in different types of sedentary behaviours on workdays and non-workdays. Being sedentary at work was associated with more sedentary behaviour outside of work. Negative perceptions towards physical activity may influence the amount of time spent in sedentary behaviours. These data should help to better identify target groups in public health interventions to reduce sedentary behaviours in working adul…

  • Obesogenic environments: A systematic review of the association between the physical environment and adult weight status, the SPOTLIGHT project

Open Access•Joreintje D Mackenbach, Harry Rutter et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

  • Sustainable prevention of obesity through integrated strategies: The SPOTLIGHT project’s conceptual framework and design

    Open Access•J Lakerveld, J Brug et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

SPOTLIGHT offers the potential to develop approaches that combine an understanding of the obesogenicity of environments in Europe, and thus how they can be improved, with an appreciation of the individual factors that explain why people respond differently to such environments. Its findings will inform governmental authorities and professionals, academics, NGOs and private sector stakeholders engaged in the development and implementation of polic…

  • How many steps/day are enough? for adults

    Open Access•Catrine Tudor-Locke, Cora L Craig et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2011

Physical activity guidelines from around the world are typically expressed in terms of frequency, duration, and intensity parameters. Objective monitoring using pedometers and accelerometers offers a new opportunity to measure and communicate physical activity in terms of steps/day. Various step-based versions or translations of physical activity guidelines are emerging, reflecting public interest in such guidance. However, there appears to be a …

  • Effectiveness of school-based interventions in Europe to promote healthy nutrition in children and adolescents: Systematic review of published and ‘grey’ literature

Open Access•Eveline Van Cauwenberghe, Lea Maes et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Nutrition•2010

The objective of the present review was to summarise the existing European published and ‘grey’ literature on the effectiveness of school-based interventions to promote a healthy diet in children (6–12 years old) and adolescents (13–18 years old). Eight electronic databases, websites and contents of key journals were systematically searched, reference lists were screened, and authors and experts in the field were contacted for studies evaluating …

Open Access•H Charreire, Romain Casey et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2010

Objective Through a literature review, we investigated the geographic information systems (GIS) methods used to define the food environment and the types of spatial measurements they generate. Design Review study. Setting Searches were conducted in health science databases, including Medline/Pubmed, PsycINFO, Francis and GeoBase. We included studies using GIS-based measures of the food environment published up to 1 June 2008. Results Twenty-nine …

Sandrine Bertrais, Paul Preziosi et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2004•Cited by: 3•References: 31

Objective. We evaluated the characteristics of French subjects meeting current public health recommendations for physical activity. Methods. We assessed leisure-time physical activity cross-sectionally in 7404 adults aged 45 to 68 years with applied logistic regression models. Results. Meeting the recommended physical activity levels was more likely in subjects aged 60 years and older and in women with higher education levels or living in rural a…
