Excavations in the Laird's Hall, Drum Castle, Aberdeenshire
Report of an excavation carried out at the Castle of Drum in 1991 to investigate the possibility of uncovering evidence of the life of the great tower prior to the seventeenth century, and to try to date the structure. Excavation was restricted to the upper Laird's Hall and to part of the cellar. Although few datable artefacts were recovered, organic remains from floor deposits survived. The stone base of a screen was uncovered at the eastern end…
A Radiocarbon Age Calculation Program for Windows
The management of counting files, the calculation of radiocarbon age, and the creation and maintenance of databases for storage and retrieval of laboratory data are time-consuming and exacting tasks. These routine functions are essential to the successful operation of all 14 C dating laboratories. However, since the number of 14 C dating laboratories worldwide is rather limited, it is unlikely that a commercial software company will produce a pro…
A Recent History of 14 C, 137 Cs, 210 Pb, and 241 Am Accumulation at Two Irish Peat Bog Sites
Data on radiocarbon ( 14 C), 137 Cs, 210 Pb, and 241 Am levels in an ombrotrophic peat sequence from a montane site on the east coast of Ireland are compared with data from a similar sequence at an Atlantic peatland site on the west coast. The 14 C profiles from the west and east coasts show a broadly similar pattern. Levels increase from 100 pMC or less in the deepest horizons examined, to peak values at the west and east coast sites of 117 ± 0.…
Performance of Models for Radiocarbon Dating of Groundwater
Appropriate management strategies are essential for the protection and maintenance of groundwater resources. It is therefore important that aquifers are understood in terms of hydraulics, recharge, and yield potential, and that the vulnerability of aquifers to surface pollution is evaluated. A range of aquifer types were examined in this study, and water samples were analyzed for the radiocarbon content of the total dissolved inorganic carbon (TD…
Ruthven in Badenoch
Excavations in 1983 brought to light physical evidence for the later medieval castle, including the well, and shed new light on the layout of the military barracks which replaced it after the 1715 Jacobite Rising. The project was funded by Historic Scotland
Excavations at Newark Castle, Port Glasgow, 1984 and 1997
This report describes excavations undertaken in 1984 around the perimeter of the barmkin of Newark Castle, built in the late 15th century and radically altered a century later.Service trenches were also opened on the west side of the castle in 1997.The earlier investigation uncovered sections of the barmkin wall on all sides of the castle and evidence of some buildings set against it; the later excavation revealed traces of what was probably a co…
A late medieval hall-house at Uttershill Castle, Penicuik, Midlothian
This report presents the results of an integrated study of Uttershill Castle, Penicuik, undertaken in advance of a proposed restoration programme.Documentary research was combined with detailed architectural survey and archaeological excavation. The results indicate a sequence of development more complex than first suggested by the appearance of the ruins. The castle was initially a twostorey bastle-house built in the 16th century. The upper floor w…
Excavations at Castle of Wardhouse, Aberdeenshire
Advanced plough erosion prompted rescue excavation at the moated site of Castle of Wardhouse in1988.An integrated programme of work involving aerial photography, field survey, remote sensing, palynological analysis and excavation enabled interpretation of the complex development of the site in its historic environment (beyond this, palynology indicates human intervention in the environs since at least 5000 BP).The defences of the 13th-century moa…
Inchaffray Abbey, Perth & Kinross
Dunstaffnage Castle, Argyll & Bute
Reports excavations in areas thought to encompass the donjon and hall respectively. Traces of an early curtain wall predating the north tower were found. At ground level, two window embrasures were revealed in the east wall of the building and, on its south side, a doorway into a passage linking with the east range. In the late seventeenth or eighteenth century the passage was blocked and a fireplace inserted into the north gable of the east rang…
