  • Behavioural and neuropharmacological aspects of maternal aggression in rodents

    Open Access•Jan Mos, Berend Olivier et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1990•References: 74

Behavioural and pharmacological studies of aggression have often focussed on males, but aggression of females, e.g., that of a lactating female against strange intruders, can be quite impressive. The behavioural aspects of this postpartum aggression in rodents are reviewed as introduction to its use as a female aggression paradigm in psychopharmacology. The effects of alcohol, d-amphetamine, haloperidol, naloxone, scopolamine, and the antidepress…

  • The ventromedial hypothalamus and aggressive behaviour in rats

    Open Access•Berend Olivier•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1977•References: 16

Male rats were given bilateral lesions in either the anterior or posterior ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH). The intermale aggressive behaviour of these animals within their own territory was observed before and after the surgical procedure and compared with the behaviour of sham-operated animals. The effects of anterior VMH lesions include an increased tendency to respond with frontal threatening upon approach of a conspecific male. This behaviou…
