Representing Cities in a Digital Age
A field note from the digisphere. Or that seam where the digital meets the documentary record. In keeping with our friendship and collaborations over the years, this note and the project it describes has everything to do with Los Angeles and its dizzying array of urban forms, both extant and long gone. Three years ago, we organized an online exhibition, Form and Landscape: Southern California Edison and the Los Angeles Basin, 1940-1990. This was …
Bulldozer: Demolition and Clearance of the Postwar Landscape
As I write, earthmoving equipment is mounding desert soil into tees and fairways for a golf course across the street. Tractors, scrapers, and compacters ready pads for apartment complexes, tilt-up warehouses, and commercial complexes along the route I commute most days. On campus, bucket loaders scrape away a knoll that awaits construction of a classroom complex. The clearing away of one landscape to be replaced by another, an act described in th…
Industry, political alliances and the regulation of urban space in Los Angeles

Little is known about how…

Border City: Race and Social Distance in Los Angeles
Los Angeles and history are not terms that couple easily in the popular imaginary or, for that matter, in the imagination of scholars who study American society and culture. Rather, accounts of this city's past evoke and at times emulate turn-of-the-century booster promotions intended to draw émigrés to a land of prosperity and progress, a place where the future would arrive first; that future focus has held an undue grip on our analysis of great…
