Tooth Loss Related with Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome in a General Urban Japanese Population: The Suita Study
We examined whether the number of teeth could be a surrogate marker for metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk in cross-section. A total of 3771 individuals from the general urban Japanese population (1690 men, 2081 women; mean age 67.1 ± 11.0 years) participated in this study. Participants were diagnosed with MetS with three or more components hypertension, hyperglycemia, lipid metabolism abnormality, and abnormal abdominal girth. Questionnaires were ad…
Estimated 24 h Urinary Sodium-to-Potassium Ratio Is Related to Renal Function Decline: A 6-Year Cohort Study of Japanese Urban Residents
The effect of the sodium-to-potassium ratio (Na/K) on renal function within the clinically normal range of renal function are limited. We investigated the effects of an estimated 24 h urinary Na/K (e24hUNa/K) on a 6-year renal function decline among 927 urban Japanese community dwellers with no history of cardiovascular diseases and medication for hypertension, diabetes, or dyslipidemia. We partitioned the subjects into quartiles according to the…
Being Conscious of Water Intake Positively Associated with Sufficient Non-Alcohol Drink Intake Regardless of Seasons and Reasons in Healthy Japanese; the Kobe Study: A Cross Sectional Study
The present study sought to clarify if being conscious of water intake (CWI) is associated with sufficient non-alcohol drink (NAD) intake. We used data of healthy participants without diabetes, aged 40-74 years, in the Kobe Orthopedic and Biomedical Epidemiologic (KOBE) study. The association between being CWI and NAD intake was evaluated by multivariate linear regression analyses after adjusting for age, sex, surveyed months (seasons), alcohol d…
Relationship of type of work with health-related quality of life
Cumulative impact of axial, structural, and repolarization ECG findings on long-term cardiovascular mortality among healthy individuals in Japan: National Integrated Project for Prospective Observatio…
Individual ECG abnormalities had an additive effect in predicting CVD outcome risk in our large-scale cohort study.
Effect size and cost-effectiveness estimates of breast and cervical cancer screening reminders by population size through complete enumeration of Japanese local municipalities
Client reminders for breast and cervical cancer screening increased attendance rates in smaller municipalities in Japan
Influence of cigarette smoking on coronary artery and aortic calcium among random samples from populations of middle-aged Japanese and Korean men
BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking is a risk factor of coronary heart disease. Vascular calcification such as coronary artery calcium (CAC) and aortic calcium (AC) is associated with coronary heart disease. The authors hypothesised that cigarette smoking is associated with coronary artery and aortic calcifications in Japanese and Koreans with high smoking prevalence. METHODS: Random samples from populations of 313 Japanese and 302 Korean men aged 40-4…
Relationship between health-related quality of life and clustering of metabolic syndrome diagnostic components
P1-257 Relationship between the number of established cardiovascular risk factors and annual medical costs in Japan: Cost analysis in 38 890 Japanese individuals
Background Information about the relationship between the number of established cardiovascular disease risk factors and medical costs is limited. Methods A linked analysis of the medical costs and health examination measures was performed in Shiga, Japan. Medical costs information for the period April 2000–May 2006 was collected from the Shiga National Health Insurance Organization database. Corresponding data for 38 890 individuals (age, ≥40 yea…
P1-530 Blood pressure categories and long-term mortality risk of total and components of cardiovascular diseases among Japanese: A 24 year follow-up of representative Japanese (Nippon Data80)
In Western population, blood pressure (BP) was reported to predict long-term (over 20 years) future mortality of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). However, there is few reports based on long-term follow-up studies in Asian population where stroke is dominant among CVDs. We investigated the association between BP and 24 year mortality risk of total and components of CVD in a representative Japanese population. Methods A cohort study of nationwide rep…
Population Attributable Fraction of Smoking and Metabolic Syndrome on Cardiovascular Disease Mortality in Japan: A 15-Year Follow Up of Nippon Data90
Our results indicated that a large proportion of excess CVD deaths was observed in smokers without metabolic syndrome or obesity, especially in men. These findings suggest that intervention targeting on smokers, irrespective of the presence of metabolic syndrome, is still important for the prevention of CVD in Asian countries
Relation between sleep quality and quantity, quality of life, and risk of developing diabetes in healthy workers in Japan: The High-risk and Population Strategy for Occupational Health Promotion (Hipo…
Medium and high frequencies of difficulty initiating sleep, but not difficulty in maintaining sleep or in sleep duration, are associated with higher risks of diabetes in relatively healthy Asian workers, even after adjusting for a large number of possible further factors
Are comprehensive environmental changes as effective as health education for smoking cessation
Cumulative environmental changes are fairly effective in promoting smoking cessation, and may yield similar smoking cessation rates as a health education intervention reaching all smokers regardless of their willingness to quit smoking
