Predictors of effective kangaroo mother care, exclusive breastfeeding, and skin-to-skin contact among low birthweight newborns in Amhara, Ethiopia
Background: Globally, 20% of all newborns are born with low birth weight (LBW). There is, therefore, an urgent need to expedite the delivery of high-impact, evidenced-based, and low-cost interventions such as kangaroo mother care (KMC (defined as continuous skin-to-skin care) and exclusive breastfeeding for this vulnerable group. Methods: A multinational World Health Organization (WHO)-supported consortium created and tested the impact of locally…

Facility-based care for moderately low birthweight infants in India, Malawi, and Tanzania
Globally, increasing rates of facility-based childbirth enable early intervention for small vulnerable newborns. We describe health system-level inputs, current feeding, and discharge practices for moderately low birthweight (MLBW) infants (1500- 10% less than their birthweight; 18.8% of infants were discharged with weights below facility-specific policy [1800g in India, 1500g in Malawi, and 2000g in Tanzania]. Based on descriptive analysis, we f…
Home environment and nutritional status mitigate the wealth gap in child development
Interventions focusing on improving quality of home environment, maternal education, wellbeing, and child nutrition status may help reduce developmental deficits associated with poverty
Micronutrient deficiencies among preschool-aged children and women of reproductive age worldwide
BACKGROUND: Micronutrient deficiencies compromise immune systems, hinder child growth and development, and affect human potential worldwide. Yet, to our knowledge, the only existing estimate of the global prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies is from over 30 years ago and is based only on the prevalence of anaemia. We aimed to estimate the global and regional prevalence of deficiency in at least one of three micronutrients among preschool-aged…
Approaches to quantify the contribution of multiple anemia risk factors in children and women from cross-sectional national surveys
Background Attributable fractions (AF) of anemia are often used to understand the multifactorial etiologies of anemia, despite challenges interpreting them in cross-sectional studies. We aimed to compare different statistical approaches for estimating AF for anemia due to inflammation, malaria, and micronutrient deficiencies including iron, vitamin A, vitamin B12, and folate. Methods AF were calculated using nationally representative survey data …
Early life migration and undernutrition among circular migrant children
BACKGROUND: India holds the world's largest burden of chronic and acute child undernutrition. Poverty and systemic inequities are basic causes of undernutrition that also drive households to engage in circular migration for livelihood. Short-term, temporary movement of the whole family, including young children, is common; yet, the nutritional implications of recurrent movements beginning in early life has not been studied. We sought to estimate …
Perceived neighbourhood food access is associated with consumption of animal-flesh food, fruits and vegetables among mothers and young children in peri-urban Cambodia
Objective: To examine whether mothers’ perceived neighbourhood food access is associated with their own and their young children’s consumption of animal-flesh food, fruits and vegetables in peri-urban areas of Cambodia. Design: A cross-sectional survey measured food consumption frequency and perceived neighbourhood food access, the latter including six dimensions of food availability, affordability, convenience, quality, safety and desirability. …
Comparing hemoglobin distributions between population-based surveys matched by country and time
We identify substantial differences in anemia estimates from surveys of similar populations. Further work is needed to identify the cause of these differences to improve the robustness of anemia estimates for comparing populations and tracking improvements over time
