Associations between causal attributions for obesity and long-term weight loss
Obesity is a complex disease caused by a wide array of behavioral, biological, and environmental factors. However, obesity is often attributed to oversimplified and stigmatizing causal factors such as laziness, lack of willpower, and failure to take personal responsibility for one's health. Understanding of the causal factors that contribute to obesity among people with obesity may affect their weight management efforts. The current study explore…
Genetic Predictors of Depressive Symptoms in the Look Ahead Trial
OBJECTIVES: Numerous studies have found elevated depressive symptoms among individuals with Type 2 diabetes, yet the mechanisms remain unclear. We examined whether genetic loci previously associated with depressive symptoms predict depressive symptoms among overweight/obese individuals with Type 2 diabetes or change in depressive symptoms during behavioral weight loss. METHODS: The Illumina CARe iSelect (IBC) chip and Cardiometabochip were charac…

Neighborhood Safety, Collective Efficacy, and Obesity in Women with Young Children
Objective : To test the hypothesis that mothers of young children would have a higher prevalence of obesity if they lived in neighborhoods that they perceived as unsafe or as having a low level of collective efficacy. Research Methods and Procedures : Using data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a cross‐sectional analysis was conducted of 2445 women living in 20 large (population ≥ 200, 000) U.S. cities. BMI was measured on 72%…
Primary Care Physicians’ Attitudes about Obesity and Its Treatment
Objective : This study was designed to assess physicians’ attitudes toward obese patients and the causes and treatment of obesity. Research Methods and Procedures : A questionnaire assessed attitudes in 2 geographically representative national random samples of 5000 primary care physicians. In one sample ( N = 2500), obesity was defined as a BMI of 30 to 40 kg/m 2 , and in the other ( N = 2500), obesity was defined as a BMI > 40. Results : Six hu…

Binge-eating disorder and the night-eating syndrome
Binge eating disorder is far less frequent than has been believed on the basis of questionnaire studies and it is highly responsive to placebos. Frequency of the night-eating syndrome is comparable to that of binge eating disorder. Future studies should assess binge eating disorder by interview rather than by self-administered questionnaire

Interpersonal Cognitive Differentiation and Drug of Choice
The relationship between drug abusers' level of interpersonal cognitive differentiation and preferred drug of abuse was explored. 30 subjects completed a drug-history questionnaire which provided information on the pattern and extent of drug use. Interpersonal cognitive differentiation was assessed with a modified form of Kelly's grid repertory test. Depressant abusers were significantly less differentiated than stimulant abusers. Cross-validatio…
MMPI as a Predictor of Weight Loss
30 subjects participating in a study of -weight loss completed the MMPI as part of a pretreatment test battery. At the 7-wk. posttreatment assessment Barron's (1953) ego-strength scale correlated positively with weight loss. The hypochondriasis and hysteria scales correlated negatively with weight loss at 6- and 16-wk. follow-up. These findings point to the possibility of employing the MMPI as a predictor of weight loss
