The role of antioxidant nutrients in mitigating PM2.5-related health risks in young Indian children
Introduction Pollution (PM 2.5 ) exposure can result in acute respiratory illness (ARI) and anaemia in children. We aimed to investigate if antioxidant nutrient intakes could mitigate the impact of PM 2.5 on child health outcomes on a national scale in India. Methods We triangulated satellite-derived PM 2.5 exposure data at the primary sampling unit level, with ARI and anaemia prevalence data from national district-level survey, and antioxidant n…
Impact evaluation of a population-based ‘Screen and Treat for Anaemia Reduction (STAR)’ strategy
INTRODUCTION: Population level screen and treat approach for anaemia reduction could be beneficial but its feasibility and impact remains to be tested. METHODS: This cluster randomised trial in rural Telangana included 14 clusters randomised (1:1) to either intervention or control arms. A cluster included all participants (6 months to 50 years) served by a frontline health worker. In the intervention arm, participants were screened for anaemia at…
A framework for city-specific air quality health index
Air quality index (AQI) is a crucial tool for communicating the health risks of air quality to the public. However, the current AQI in India does not consider the health impacts of exposure to air pollutants, necessitating the development of air quality health index (AQHI). Here, we proposed a framework for developing city-specific AQHI that better reflects local air quality and associated health risks using air pollution and health data from two…
Optimisation tools for meeting nutrient requirements of Indian children and adults at optimal cost
Objective: To present a tool and examine the minimum cost of a healthy and diverse diet that meets the daily requirements of essential nutrients for the people of India, using interactive web-based tools. Design: Linear-programming algorithms were adapted into two web-based tools: a Food Optimisation for Population (FOP) tool and a Diet Optimisation Tool (DOT). The FOP optimises daily food choices at a population level, considering local food con…
Improving adolescents’ dietary behavior through teacher-delivered cancer prevention education

High ambient air pollution erodes the benefits of using clean cooking fuel in preventing low birth weight in India
A large fraction of the population in rural India continues to use biomass fuel for cooking and heating. In-utero exposure to the resulting household air pollution (HAP), is known to increase the risk of low birth weight (LBW). Mitigating HAP, by shifting to clean cooking fuel (CCF), is expected to minimize the risk associated with LBW. However, India also has high levels of ambient air pollution (AAP). Whether exposure to AAP modifies the effect…
Intake of ultra-processed food, dietary diversity and the risk of nutritional inadequacy among adults in India
Objective: This study assessed diet diversity and consumption of ultra-processed foods and explored its impact on macronutrient intake and risk of micronutrient inadequacy. Design: Cross-sectional, non-probability snowball sampling. Setting: Nutrient intake was assessed using 24-h dietary recall method and diet diversity through FAO-diet diversity score (DDS). Mann–Whitney U test was used to assess differences in risk of inadequacy across gender.…

Demographic and Risk-Factor Differences between Users and Non-Users of Unscheduled Healthcare among Pediatric Outpatients with Persistent Asthma
This study assesses differences between users and non-users of unscheduled healthcare for persistent childhood asthma, with regard to select demographic and risk factors. The objectives are to provide important healthcare utilization information and a foundation for future research on self-management effectiveness (SME), informed by a recently developed "holistic framework" for measuring SME in childhood asthma. An 18-month retrospective chart re…
An uncertainty estimate of the prevalence of stunting in national surveys
This study proposes a robust statistical method to estimate uncertainty in stunting prevalence estimates due to incongruent dispersions of height measured in national surveys for children < 5 years in relation to the WHO height-for-age standard. The uncertainty is partly due to population heterogeneity, but also due to measurement precision, and calls for better quality in these measurements
The impact of air pollution on deaths, disease burden, and life expectancy across the states of India
Background Air pollution is a major planetary health risk, with India estimated to have some of the worst levels globally. To inform action at subnational levels in India, we estimated the exposure to air pollution and its impact on deaths, disease burden, and life expectancy in every state of India in 2017. Methods We estimated exposure to air pollution, including ambient particulate matter pollution, defined as the annual average gridded concen…
Angiotensin II and the Natriuretic and Blood Pressure Response to Mental Stress in African Americans
Ang II contributes to sodium retention in retainers. Furthermore, our findings indicate that suppression of Ang II has a beneficial effect on SBP during rest and stress in this population
Ambient Air Pollution Exposure Estimation for the Global Burden of Disease 2013
Exposure to ambient air pollution is a major risk factor for global disease. Assessment of the impacts of air pollution on population health and evaluation of trends relative to other major risk factors requires regularly updated, accurate, spatially resolved exposure estimates. We combined satellite-based estimates, chemical transport model simulations, and ground measurements from 79 different countries to produce global estimates of annual ave…
Can Currently Available Advanced Combustion Biomass Cook-Stoves Provide Health Relevant Exposure Reductions? Results from Initial Assessment of Select Commercial Models in India
A comparative risk assessment of burden of disease and injury attributable to 67 risk factors and risk factor clusters in 21 regions, 1990–2010
Prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in rural women of Tamilnadu
BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the 13th leading cause of burden of disease worldwide and is expected to become 5th by 2020. Biomass fuel combustion significantly contributes to COPD, although smoking is recognized as the most important risk factor. Rural women in developing countries bear the largest share of this burden resulting from chronic exposures to biomass fuel smoke. Although there is considerable strength of…
Air pollution from household solid fuel combustion in India
Environmental and occupational risk factors contribute to nearly 40% of the national burden of disease in India, with air pollution in the indoor and outdoor environment ranking amongst leading risk factors. It is now recognized that the health burden from air pollution exposures that primarily occur in the rural indoors, from pollutants released during the incomplete combustion of solid fuels in households, may rival or even exceed the burden at…
Case studies on heat stress related perceptions in different industrial sectors in southern India
Linkages between thermal loads and its physiological consequences have been widely studied in non-tropical developed country settings. In many developing countries like India, despite the widespread recognition of the problem, limited attempts have been made to estimate health impacts related to occupational heat stress and fewer yet to link heat stress with potential productivity losses. This is reflected in the ubiquity of workplaces with limit…
