  • Effect of prenatal multiple micronutrient supplements and medium-quantity lipid-based nutritional supplements on maternal weight gain and infant birth weight in rural Niger

Open Access•Susan M Rattigan, Souna Garba et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2025

INTRODUCTION: The risk of adverse birth outcomes, such as low birth weight ( 0.05). We found no effect of MMN or MQ-LNS on maternal haemoglobin concentration or anaemia in the second and third trimesters (p values >0.05). CONCLUSION: There was no statistically significant difference in birth weight, maternal weight gain or anaemia by prenatal nutritional supplementation strategy. However, statistical power in the trial was limited. A combination …

  • Not forgetting the humanitarian contexts in the fight against antimicrobial resistance

Open Access•Pilar García-Vello, Carine Naim et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Despite Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) being a growing threat to global public health, there is scarce evidence from humanitarian settings. Working in fragile contexts, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is well positioned to identify knowledge gaps, raise unrecognised issues, and contribute to the global AMR agenda. Based on MSF’s experience, this review intends to highlight the research priorities on AMR for the most vulnerable patients. Infection …

  • HIV epidemic and cascade of care in 12 east African rural fishing communities

Open Access•Juan Burgos-Soto, Jihane Ben Farhat et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

HIV prevalence was high in these fishing communities, particularly among women and fishermen. Important progress has been made along the HIV treatment cascade, and the UNAIDS goal for viral suppression in population was achieved. However, gaps remain and HIV care strategies focusing on young people are urgently needed. HIV preventive interventions should target particularly women, young people and fishermen though HIV preventive and care services…

  • Measles seroprevalence after reactive vaccination campaigns during the 2015 measles outbreak in four health zones of the former Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of Congo

Open Access•Patrick Keating, Antonio Isidro Carrión Martín et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

The measured seroprevalence was consistent with the events that occurred in these HZs over the past few years. Measles seroprevalence might prove a valuable source of information to help adjust the timing of future SIAs and prioritizing support to the EPI in this region as long as the VC does not reach a level high enough to efficiently prevent epidemic flare-ups

  • The gender, social and cultural influences on the management and use of unconditional cash transfers in Niger

Open Access•Jennifer Scott, Caroline Marquer et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2017

Objective The current qualitative study aimed to identify gender, social and cultural influences on the management and use of unconditional cash transfers as part of a prospective intervention study in Niger. Design In February to March 2012, focus group discussions and semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with female caregivers of children aged 6 to 23 months who received unconditional cash transfers. Discussion and interview tra…

  • Effect of ready‐to‐use foods for preventing child undernutrition in Niger

Open Access•Claudine Prudhon, Céline Langendorf et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2016

Strategies for preventing undernutrition comprise a range of interventions, including education, provision of complementary food and cash transfer. Here, we compared monthly distributions of two different lipid-based nutrient supplements (LNS), large-quantity LNS (LNS-LQ) and medium-quantity LNS (LNS-MQ) for 15 months on prevention of undernutrition among children 6 to 23 months. Both groups also received cash transfer for the first 5 months of t…
