“I Could Do Stereotypical Old People Things … but I Feel Like I Would Get Bored With That Stuff”
The preventive and corrective proactivity model explores how internal and external resources mediate age-related stressors to counter negative outcomes of aging. Older adults’ proactivity about their future is consistently associated with higher quality of life, but research has not explored younger adults’ perceptions of their aging. We used interpretive phenomenology analysis to analyze 24 students’ essays from the beginning and end of an intro…
When I’m 75
Despite robust literature on people’s attitudes toward aging, far less is known about attitudes toward one’s own aging, especially among college students. We examined college students’ self-perceptions of the challenges of aging using essays from a “When I’m 75” assignment implemented at the beginning and end of the semester in an introductory gerontology course. Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis was used to analyze 24 students’ perceptions …
Identifying Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities
Locating NORCs could aid governments to create "aging in place" sensitive policies to address issues of independence, social care, health care, volunteerism, and community participation
Building Bridges Across Age and Cognitive Barriers Through Art
The positive impact of intergenerational service learning experience on college students' academic and personal development is well documented. However, it is not clear whether students engaged in such programs with elders who have dementia gain similar benefits. Qualitative analysis of 300 journals written by 59 students participating in the Opening Minds Through Art intergenerational art program for people with dementia revealed that facilitati…
Lay Explanations and Self-Management of Diabetes in Kathmandu, Nepal
Respondents from this sample appear to hold lay explanations of diabetes that are similar to those of their peers in developed nations. Findings are discussed, including the caveat that these mostly male, relatively educated, and urban-residing adults with diabetes are not necessarily representative of Nepali society
Accuracy of Caregivers' Recollections of Caregiving Hassles
Despite their common use in clinical settings, caregivers' recollections of the hassles they face in caregiving have not been examined in previous research. Ninety-seven spousal caregivers of persons with dementia were assessed for 6 consecutive months concerning caregiving hassles and numerous other issues. A multi-pass rank order assessment identified the most stressful event in caregiving over each month-long interval. Each month via telephone…
The Effects of Interparental Divorce and Conflict on College Students' Romantic Relationships
The purpose of this research was to examine college students' trust and love styles in their current romantic relationships as a function of structural (i.e., parental marital status, gender, sexual activity), family environment (i.e., conflict, cohesion, and expressiveness while growing up), and current relationship (e.g., length of relationship) variables. In general, family environment variables did not contribute significantly to trust or lov…
Predictors of Attitudes toward Three Target Groups of Elderly Persons
This research compared attitudes of 143 nursing home employees toward three hypothetical target groups of older adults: well elderly persons, physically ill elderly persons, and elderly persons with Alzheimer's disease. Staff provided successively less positive evaluations of physically ill elderly persons and elderly persons with Alzheimer's disease compared to well elderly persons. Age, education, and contact with grandparents differentially pr…
The Meaning of Older Adults' Health Appraisals
This study explored open-ended responses regarding attributions underlying health appraisals made by older adults, resulting in five categories (physical health, attitudinal/behavioral, externally focused, health transcendence, nonreflective). The older the respondents, the less likely they were to focus on physical aspects of their health. Health optimists were the most likely to make attitudinal/behavioral or health transcendent attributions, w…
