Mortality risks of infants with unmeasured birth weight in 33 sub-Saharan African countries
BACKGROUND: Although most infants have their birth weights measured, not all newborns have this opportunity, particularly those in low and middle-income countries. This study evaluates neonatal, infant and child mortality among infants who were not weighed at birth compared with peers weighed at birth and to those identified as having low birth weight. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study of 308 414 African children in 33 countries from…
Small and sick newborn care
Health Facility Assessments (HFAs) are important for measuring and tracking service readiness for small and sick newborn care (SSNC). NEST360 Alliance aims to reduce neonatal mortality in four countries (Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania). NEST360 and UNICEF facilitated HFA tool design with ministries of health in four African countries and developed two complimentary approaches to summarise readiness. Using the NEST360/UNICEF HFA tool, we collect…
Data science and artificial intelligence for maternal, newborn and child health
The limited application of data science and artificial intelligence in MNCH at the national level highlights a significant gap in Africa. Our review found that 28 studies (53.8%) were research projects compared to operational implementations integrated into routine systems to inform policy. Main barriers include inadequate infrastructure, limited data stewardship capacity, and insufficient government commitment. Opportunities exist through Africa…
National, regional, and global estimates of preterm birth in 2020, with trends from 2010
BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is the leading cause of neonatal mortality and is associated with long-term physical, neurodevelopmental, and socioeconomic effects. This study updated national preterm birth rates and trends, plus novel estimates by gestational age subgroups, to inform progress towards global health goals and targets, and aimed to update country, regional, and global estimates of preterm birth for 2020 in addition to trends between 2010…
A novel development indicator based on population-average height trajectories of children aged 0–5 years modelled using 145 surveys in 64 countries, 2000–2018
INTRODUCTION: Children's growth status is an important measure commonly used as a proxy indicator of advancements in a country's health, human capital and economic development. We aimed to assess the feasibility of using Super-Imposition by Translation And Rotation (SITAR) models for summarising population-based cross-sectional height-by-age data of children under 5 years across 64 countries. METHODS: Using 145 publicly available Demographic and …
Small and sick newborn care during the Covid-19 pandemic
INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic is disrupting health systems globally. Maternity care disruptions have been surveyed, but not those related to vulnerable small newborns. We aimed to survey reported disruptions to small and sick newborn care worldwide and undertake thematic analysis of healthcare providers' experiences and proposed mitigation strategies. METHODS: Using a widely disseminated online survey in three languages, we reached out to n…
