We included participants (n = 718; mean age = 70.5 years) who exhibited hearing loss at baseline or the first follow-up and had no prior history of hearing aid us…

  • Vital Exhaustion and Retinal Microvascular Changes in Cardiovascular Disease

Ning Cheung, Sophie Rogers et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2009

OBJECTIVE: To determine if vital exhaustion, a measure of negative emotion, is associated with microvascular changes in the retina. Negative psychological factors, such as depression, have been implicated in the development of cardiovascular disease. Whether this link is mediated by macrovascular or microvascular disease is unknown. METHODS: We performed a population-based, cross-sectional study of 10,364 White and African Americans aged 48 to 73…

METHODS: Self-reported data from the 1995 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey of adults 18 years and older with diabetes were analyzed. Correlates of visual impairment were examined by multiple logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The prevalence of self-rated visual impairment …

  • Self-rated health and mortality in people with diabetes

Erik J Dasbach, Ronald Klein et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1994•Cited by: 1•References: 19

OBJECTIVES. This study examined whether self-rated health is an independent and significant predictor of mortality in people with diabetes, using data collected in the Wisconsin Epidemiologic Study of Diabetic Retinopathy. METHODS. Participants were asked to rate their health in comparison with others their age. A proportional hazards model was used to regress survival time on self-rated health and a number of covariates measuring physical health…

  • Diagnostic x-ray exposure and lens opacities

    Ronald Klein, B E Klein et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1993•Cited by: 3•References: 3

The Beaver Dam Eye Study is a population-based study of common age-related eye diseases. During the standardized medical history, the 4926 subjects were asked whether they had ever had a chest x-ray, computerized axial tomography (CAT) scan of the head, other x-rays of the head, x-rays of the abdomen, or other diagnostic x-rays. The eye examination included photographs of the lenses of the eyes, which were subsequently graded according to protoco…

The relationships between exposure to sunlight and to the ultraviolet-B (UVB) component of light and the prevalence of lens opacities were examined in the Beaver Dam Eye Study. METHODS. Persons 43 to 84 years of age residing in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, were examined using standardized photographic assessments of lens opacities. A questionnaire about medical histo…

  • Use of cardiovascular disease medications and mortality in people with older onset diabetes

    Ronald Klein, B E Klein et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1992•References: 15

Mortality follow-up for a cohort defined in 1980 with diabetes diagnosed at 30 years of age or older has been completed through 1988. History of medication use was obtained during the initial evaluation. There were 605 (44.2%) confirmed deaths; heart disease was the underlying cause in 49.9% of the deaths. Use of loop diuretics was associated with an odds ratio of death of 1.8 (95% CI = 1.4, 2.2). Although a causal relationship cannot be inferred…

  • Cause-specific mortality in a population-based study of diabetes

Scot E Moss, Ronald Klein et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1991•Cited by: 6•References: 18

BACKGROUND. Mortality from vascular diseases has been reported to be high in diabetic persons. METHODS. To evaluate mortality from these and other specific causes, we examined cause-specific age-sex standardized mortality ratios in a geographically defined population of younger onset (diagnosed before age 30 and taking insulin, n = 1200) and older onset (diagnosed after age 30, n = 1772) diabetic persons followed for 8.5 years. Cause of death was…
