Introduction to ‘Power, Bodies and Regulation within the Context of Religion and Spirituality’: Contested Bodies: Understanding Power and Regulation within Religious Spaces
‘What Would Your Father Say?’: Izzat, Identity and Belonging in the Educational Journeys of British Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani Women
Drawing on data from thirty in-depth qualitative interviews, this article uses the idea of ‘intersectional complexity’ (Collins and Bilge 2016) and Mirza’s (2013) concept of ‘embodied intersectionality’, to examine how identity and belonging are negotiated in their secondary and post-secondary educational journeys of British women from Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani ( BIP ) heritages. It identifies how the participants experience their world t…
Orgasm as women’s work? Rethinking pleasure, ‘sex’ and the power dynamics of orgasm through the embodied experiences of orgasmic meditation practitioners
Drawing upon interviews with 33 practitioners of ‘orgasmic meditation’ in the UK and US, I question the extent to which the practice of orgasmic meditation might facilitate ways to uncouple orgasm from negative gendered constructions. I explore how the practice in some cases enables people to establish clear bodily boundaries and encourages women to centre their own pleasure, as well as opening up space to rethink what constitutes a ‘sexual’ prac…
Visual and material representations of ageing, space and rhythms in everyday life
A focus on the materiality within ageing studies brings into focus the material dimensions of space, rhythms and material objects in everyday life. The aim of this paper is to explore meanings around space in the context of the daily lives of people growing older and how materiality is embodied, embedded and performed in the material and social context of our everyday lives. The paper draws on data from the empirical research study Photographing …
The Full Monty? Meaning construction and performative possibilities in media depictions of the male strip show
This article questions the progressive potential of media depictions of male strip shows. I examine two overriding discourses within media representations, comparing these to the experiences of male dancers and female customers gleaned through ethnographic fieldwork in two strip venues. Namely, the media’s portrayal of the masculinity of male strippers as ‘fragile’; together with the construction of dancers as ‘fantasy’ subjects who know ‘what wo…
Forever 'Becoming'? Negotiating Gendered and Ageing Embodiment in Everyday Life
Drawing upon 62 participant-produced visual diaries and accompanying interview narratives, this article explores the significance of everyday body work for people in mid- to later life. Departing from previous work that has explored the intersections of gender and age in relation to a single embodied practice, this article highlights the salience of a myriad of bodily practices for the everyday ways that gender and ageing identities are constitut…

Male sex work and society
“Think of sex workers and one usually thinks of women” is the opening gambit of this volume which aptly sets the scene through which to challenge heteronormative conceptions of commercial sexual en
Issues of collaboration, representation, meaning and emotions: Utilising participant-led visual diaries to capture the everyday lives of people in mid to later life
In recent years there has been an increasing use of visual methods in ageing research. There are, however, limited reflections and critical explorations of the implications of using visual methods in research with people in mid to later life. This paper examines key methodological complexities when researching the daily lives of people as they grow older and the possibilities and limitations of using participant-generated visual diaries. The pape…
Dancing for women: Subverting heteronormativity in a lesbian erotic dance space
This article utilises participant observation, interview and collaborative visual data, collected with women erotic dancers, management and customers, to ascertain how far heteronormativity is subverted in a UK lesbian leisure space, Lippy (the name is a pseudonym), which provides erotic dance for women customers. The potential for a female ‘gaze’, the ‘normativity’ of gendered and sexualised bodies, and the notion of a ‘women’s space’ are taken …
Performing in a Night-Time Leisure Venue: A Visual Analysis of Erotic Dance
This article analyses a range of different meanings attached to images of erotic dance, with a particular focus on the 'impression management' ( Goffman 1959 ) enacted by dancers. It presents a visual analysis of the work of a female erotic performer in a lesbian erotic dance venue in the UK. Still photographs, along with observational data and interviews, convey the complexity and skill of an erotic dancer's diverse gendered and sexualised perfo…
A ‘sexy space’ for women? Heterosexual women’s experiences of a male strip show venue
The rise of male strip shows marketed towards heterosexual women has called into question the idea that only men can ‘gaze’ or be ‘sexual scrutinizers’ in public leisure spaces. This paper details the findings of an ethnographic study of a male strip event ‘Cheeky’s’, 1 1. Pseudonym. located in the Midlands, England. Utilising observation, informal interviews and photography, the paper describes the physical environment and the atmosphere of the …
