    Open Access•K H B Keefer•ARTICLE•Games and Culture•2023

This article is an exploration of one of the bestselling single player RPGs from the Assassin's Creed series, 2017's Origins, as understood through a framework of cultural race and identity theory. This article relies on theories of identity and how we experience gameworlds as players, and how our sense of self is represented in virtual bodies. The article also considers and closely analyzes the game on its historicity—the franchise is one which …

Visualizing the traumatic past is a perennial challenge, particularly for historians of the slave trade. New innovations in digital technologies may offer a transformative framework to address this problem. Epic Games and its Unreal Engine, developed for use in industries such as film and video game production, animation, architectural visualization, and virtual reality simulations, offer one potential avenue to efficiently visualize a challengin…

  • Poro, witchcraft and red water in early colonial Sierra Leone

    K H B Keefer, Katrina Keefer•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of African…•2021•References: 15

The early decades of the nineteenth century were tumultuous within the Sierra Leone colony, as abolition was enforced and the slave trade actively prosecuted legally. Missionaries on the ground at the time provide new sources with which to understand the process of judicial enslavement. Their accounts offer not only first-hand observations, but also details into trials by ordeal for accusations of witchcraft, and enslavement as a penalty despite …

This article explores considerations arising from the digitization of the personnel records from the West African Frontier Force held at the Sierra Leone Public Archives. These records reflect a knowable and living past and contain sensitive and confidential information including medical and personal details not normally disclosed to the public. Best practice and ethics must be taken into account to protect the privacy of these subjects, but this…

  • Marked by fire

    K H B Keefer•ARTICLE•Slavery and Abolition•2019•Cited by: 6

Perhaps one of the most visceral symbols used to represent the evils of the trans-Atlantic slave trade is the brand. The branding iron holds a profound semiotic weight due to its connotation with identity and how we collectively represent humans in opposition to animals. This article engages with the historical significance of the brand particularly in the context of slavery, tracing its influence through theories of identity as well as commoditi…

  • Poro on Trial

    Open Access•K H B Keefer•ARTICLE•African Studies Review•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 31

In 1913, a Special Commission Court in Sierra Leone saw a series of trials concerning members of the Human Leopard Society, and conflated this society with the regional Poro Society. This article examines one of those trials and unearths motivations for murder and questions of bias. With the reinvention of identity in the shadow of slavery, a nuanced and complicated picture emerges of the situation. Though more questions than answers are offered …

  • The First Missionaries of The Church Missionary Society in Sierra Leone, 1804–1816

    Open Access•K H B Keefer•ARTICLE•History in Africa•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 16

Many early records in West Africa arise from missionary accounts. While they may contain rich ethnographic data, this detail should be approached only after analysis and consideration of the authors of the sources in question. In early Sierra Leone, important data was recorded on behalf of the English evangelical Church Missionary Society, but the missionaries reporting on the ground comprised an insufficiently studied group of German-speaking Pi…

    K H B Keefer•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of African…•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 6

This research intersects with ongoing efforts to understand the identity of enslaved Africans entering the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Methods of reading scarification, along with its close analogue tattooing within the African context are a fundamental starting point for this study. Evidence for this approach may be found in the Registers of Liberated Africans, which are held at the Sierra Leone Public Archives at Fourah Bay College and at the N…
