Balancing ideals and realities
Our findings highlight a tension between HCPs' needs for technical functionality and workflow alignment, and the support required to adapt their practice to fully realize PCC through digital tools. Integrating PCC successfully requires organizational, cultural, and workflow adaptations, alongside active HCP engagement in design and implementation. These changes are essential to reposition PCC as an integral rather than competing component of high…
Sedimentary ancient DNA from Lake Skartjørna, Svalbard
Reconstructing past vegetation and species diversity from arctic lake sediments can be challenging because of low pollen and plant macrofossil concentrations. Information may be enhanced by metabarcoding of sedimentary ancient DNA ( sedaDNA). We developed a Holocene record from Lake Skartjørna, Svalbard, using sedaDNA, plant macrofossils and sediment properties, and compared it with published records. All but two genera of vascular plants identif…
The use of quantitative models to assess long-term climate–vegetation dynamics – A case study from the northern Scandinavian Mountains
Quantitative vegetation models combined with fossil pollen records have large potentials for assessing long-term vegetation dynamics. In this study, vegetation cover as a function of July temperatures was modelled for the Dividalen valley area situated in the northern Scandinavian Mountains. Site-specific pollen deposition values of the two dominating tree species pine and birch were simulated and compared with empirical fossil pollen values. The…
Quantification of past plant abundances based on the R-value model
Quantification of vegetation cover based on fossil pollen assemblages is valuable for proper assessment of past landscape dynamics. In the present investigation, the past vegetation cover around a pre-historic iron production site in the Budalen valley in central Norway was quantified using direction of vegetation change models. A set of fixed rules based on normal succession, the present vegetation and the ‘intuitively’ interpreted fossil pollen…
A pilot study on absolute pollen productivity estimates from mires in Norway
Bomb-pulse dated mini moss-monoliths were used to determine modern pollen accumulation rates on mire surfaces at six locations in northern and central Norway. Coupled with vegetation data these were used to assess the modern pollen–vegetation relationships for Pinus, Betula and Poaceae. Preliminary absolute pollen productivity (APP) estimates are for Pinus sylvestris 11,300 ± 2300 (SE) grains/cm 2 per yr, Betula pubescens 2200 ± 300 and Poaceae 1…

Estimating absolute pollen productivity for some European Tertiary-relict taxa
Climate, cod and crops
The SW coast of the Barents Sea is a historical transition zone between the traditional agrarian cultures of western Europe and Sami hunter-gatherers of northern Fennoscandia. It is today north of the climatic limit of cereal cultivation and the economy is primarily based on fisheries. The pollen content of two peat profiles from the outer coastal island Sørøya ( c. 70.5°N) were examined. Increased anthropogenic influence was seen in the pollen a…
Sand mass accumulation rate as a proxy for wind regimes in the SW Barents Sea during the past 3 ka
Aeolian sand mass accumulation rates were determined in a coastal mire complex on the north Norwegian island Sørøya. This measure of aeolian activity is used as a proxy for past storm intensity in the SW Barents Sea region, at least until the seventeenth century when human activities began to obscure the natural signal. Aeolian erosion started to increase in the sixth century and consistently high values are recorded from the eleventh century onw…
Human and climatic impact on mires
The development of pasture woodland in the southwest Swiss Jura Mountains over 2000 years, based on three adjacent peat profiles
The pollen content of three adjacent peat profiles has been analysed to study the development of pasture woodland in the small valley Combe des Amburnex (1300 m a.s.l.). Chronostratigraphy based on lowland pollen assemblages and radiocarbon dates was used to correlate and date the profiles. Forest and mire grazing occurred throughout at least the past two millennia. Before the ninth century the forest consisted of about equal parts of Abies, Fagu…
The effect of climate variability on pollen productivity, AD 1975-2000, recorded in a Sphagnum peat hummock
Pollen accumulation rates and pollen percentages from a Sphagnum peat hummock in the Jura Mountains were used to determine past pollen deposition. Post-bomb calibrated radiocarbon dates allowed estimations of annual variability in pollen productivity AD 1975-2000. Percentages of abundant taxa were modified (downweighted) to reduce the influence of plant cover, mean pollen productivity, and interdependence of the variables. Significant correlation…
