  • Malnutrition in infants aged under 6 months

Open Access•Marko Kerac, Philip T James et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2025

INTRODUCTION: Tackling malnutrition in infants aged under 6 months (u6m) is a major global priority yet evidence around this vulnerable group is weak. We aimed to support the rollout of new 2023 WHO guidelines by examining the burden of infant malnutrition and potential programme caseloads with new enrolment criteria. METHODS: Secondary analysis of Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) datasets. We calculated the number of underweight (low weight-f…

  • Drought, armed conflict and population mortality in Somalia, 2014–2018

Open Access•Abdihamid Warsame, Severine Frison et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

During 2010–2012, extreme food insecurity and famine in Somalia were estimated to account for 256,000 deaths. Since 2014 Somalia has experienced recurrent below-average rainfall, with consecutive failed rains in late 2016 and 2017 leading to large-scale drought, displacement and epidemics. We wished to estimate mortality across Somalia from 2014 to 2018, and measure the excess death toll attributable to the 2017–2018 drought-triggered crisis. We …

  • Muac as the sole discharge criterion from community‐based management of severe acute malnutrition in Burkina Faso

Open Access•Sheila Isanaka, Kerstin E Hanson et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2018

The use of mid upper arm circumference (MUAC) measurement to screen and determine eligibility for admission to therapeutic feeding programs has been established, but evidence and programmatic experience to inform guidance on the use of MUAC as a discharge criterion is limited. We present results from a large-scale nutritional program using MUAC for admission and discharge and compare program outcomes and response to treatment when determining eli…
