  • Scenarios of climate adaptation potential on protected working lands from management of soils

Open Access•Kristin B Byrd, Pelayo Alvarez et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

Management of protected lands may enhance ecosystem services that conservation programs were designed to protect. Practices that build soil organic matter on agricultural lands also increase soil water holding capacity, potentially reducing climatic water deficit (CWD), increasing actual evapotranspiration (AET) and increasing groundwater recharge (RCH). We developed nine spatially-explicit land use and conservation scenarios (2001–2100) in the L…

  • Food and beverage consumption and food addiction among women in the Nurses' Health Studies

    Open Access•Adina R Lemeshow, Eric B Rimm et al.•ARTICLE•Appetite•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 72

  • Body Mass Index and Risk of Death in Asian Americans

Yikyung Park, Sophia Wang et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2014•References: 30

Objectives. We investigated the association between body mass index (BMI) and mortality among Asian Americans. Methods. We pooled data from prospective cohort studies with 20 672 Asian American adults with no baseline cancer or heart disease history. We estimated hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) with Cox proportional hazards models. Results. A high, but not low, BMI was associated with increased risk of total mortality among indiv…

  • Physical Activity and Inactivity and Risk of Hip Fractures in Men

Diane Feskanich, Alan J Flint et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2014•References: 41

Objectives. We assessed associations between activity and hip fracture in men. Methods. The Health Professionals Follow-up Study reported time spent walking, sitting, and in 10 other discretionary activities every 2 years in 35 996 men aged 50 years and older from 1986 to 2010. We calculated hazard ratios (HRs) for risk of hip fracture by amount of activity and sitting in Cox proportional hazards models, adjusted for age, body mass index, smoking…

  • Body-Mass Index and Mortality among 1.46 Million White Adults

Amy Berrington de Gonzalez, Patricia Hartge et al.•ARTICLE•New England Journal of Medicine•2010

BACKGROUND: A high body-mass index (BMI, the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters) is associated with increased mortality from cardiovascular disease and certain cancers, but the precise relationship between BMI and all-cause mortality remains uncertain. METHODS: We used Cox regression to estimate hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals for an association between BMI and all-cause mortality, adjusting for age, stud…

  • Poverty status and cigarette smoking prevalence and cessation in the United States, 1983-1993

    Alan Flint, A J Flint et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•1997

Persons below the poverty threshold continue to be more likely than those at or above the threshold both to be current smokers and not to have quit. Poverty may be an indicator of underparticipation in the changing social norms regarding smoking behaviour in recent years. Individuals below the poverty threshold may need focused efforts to help achieve the Healthy People 2000 objectives for reducing adult smoking prevalence. Further understanding …
