Robust Factor Analysis for High-Dimensional Data with Outliers
Outliers are commonly encountered in financial and economic data, and pose significant challenges to the study of the conventional factor models. This paper focuses on factor analysis for high-dimensional data in the presence of random outliers. We first propose a new class of factor model which incorporates a sparse outlier matrix. We then develop a class of robust methods to estimate the factor matrix and the number of factors. Under mild condi…
Multi-Threshold Structural Equation Model
In this article, we consider the instrumental variable estimation for causal regression parameters with multiple unknown structural changes across subpopulations. We propose a multiple change point detection method to determine the number of thresholds and estimate the threshold locations in the two-stage least square procedure. After identifying the estimated threshold locations, we use the Wald method to estimate the parameters of interest, tha…
Structural Equation Model Averaging: Methodology and Application
The instrumental variable (IV) methods are attractive since they can lead to a consistent answer to the main question in causal modeling, that is, the estimation of average causal effect of an exposure on the outcome in the presence of unmeasured confounding. However, it is now acknowledged in the literature that using weak IVs might not suit the inference goal satisfactorily. We consider the problem of estimating causal effects in an observation…
Homogeneity and Structure Identification in Semiparametric Factor Models
Factor modeling is an essential tool for exploring intrinsic dependence structures in financial and economic studies through the construction of common latent variables, including the famous Fama–French three factor models for the description of asset returns in finance. However, most of the existing statistical methods for analyzing latent factors have been developed through a linear approach. In this article, we consider a semiparametric factor…
Accumulation of Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Cd in Aboveground Organs of Chinese Winter Jujube from the Yellow River Delta, China
In the present study, winter jujube organs including fruit, fruiting leaf and foliage leaf, and associated soils in 14 typical orchards in Binzhou City, Shandong Province, China were collected and determined for the mass fractions of Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Cd. The mass fractions of Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Cd in plant tissues generally showed an order of Cu > Zn > Ni > Co > Cd as well as those in the soils decreased as Zn > Cu > Ni > Co > Cd. The values …
Relationship between Built-Up Environment, Air Pollution, Activity Frequency and Prevalence of Hypertension—An Empirical Analysis from the Main City of Lanzhou
In the process of promoting the strategy of a healthy China, the built environment, as a carrier of human activities, can effectively influence the health level of residents in the light of its functional types. Based on the POI data of four main urban areas in Lanzhou, this paper classifies the built environment in terms of function into four types. The association between different types of built environments and the prevalence of hypertension …

Etiology Exploration of Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease From Traditional Chinese Medicine Constitution Perspective: A Cross-Sectional Study
Background: From the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) constitution theory perspective, the phlegm-dampness constitution is thought to be closely related to the occurrence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, this viewpoint still lacks rigorous statistical evidence. This study aimed to test the association between the phlegm-dampness constitution and NAFLD. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study. Participants were reside…
Smoking cessation in pregnancy and the risk of child behavioural problems: A longitudinal prospective cohort study
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to examine the influence of smoking in pregnancy on child and adolescent behavioural development, in comparison with mothers who ceased smoking in the first 18 weeks of pregnancy and with those who never smoked, in a large prospective pregnancy cohort. METHODS: The Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort (Raine) Study provided comprehensive data from 2900 pregnancies. Smoking was assessed at 18 weeks gestation, a…
Neighbourhood socioeconomic status and maternal factors at birth as moderators of the association between birth characteristics and school attainment: A population study of children attending governme…
BACKGROUND: This article investigates whether reading and writing skills among children of equivalent perinatal characteristics differ by neighbourhood socioeconomic status and maternal factors. METHODS: Notifications of births for all non-Aboriginal singletons born in 1990-7 in Western Australia subsequently attending government primary schools were linked to the State literacy tests in grade three and with information on socioeconomic status of…
