Beyond Linear Risk
The goal of this study was to investigate the contextual nature of prenatal depression (PND) and postpartum depression (PPD). We report an investigation of maternal PND and PPD using nonrandomly clustered data from 8,936 mothers in 16 cohorts in the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Cohort. We used a recursive partitioning algorithm (ctree) to account for differential effects arising from predictor and effect heterogeneity …
Using Echo program data to develop a brief measure of caregiver support and cognitive stimulation using the home observation for measurement of the environment-infant/toddler (Home-IT)
Data from three NIH Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program cohorts that collected the HOME-Infant-Toddler (HOME-IT age 0–3 years) version were used to examine the reliability of a brief scale of caregiver support and cognitive stimulation. Participants with HOME-IT data (N = 2518) were included in this analysis. Mean child age at HOME-IT assessment was 1.51 years, 48% of children were female, and 43% of children identifi…
Maternal education prospectively predicts child neurocognitive function
A large body of research has established a relation between maternal education and children's neurocognitive functions, such as executive function and language. However, most studies have focused on early childhood and relatively few studies have examined associations with changes in maternal education over time. Consequently, it remains unclear if early maternal education is longitudinally related to neurocognitive functions in children, adolesc…
Using item response theory to optimize measurement of chronic stress in pregnancy
Considerations for conducting qualitative research with pediatric patients for the purpose of PRO development
Psychometric properties of a brief, clinically relevant measure of pain in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma
PROMIS® Parent Proxy Report Scales for children ages 5–7 years
Development of a PROMIS item bank to measure pain interference
This paper describes the psychometric properties of the PROMIS-pain interference (PROMIS-PI) bank. An initial candidate item pool (n=644) was developed and evaluated based on the review of existing instruments, interviews with patients, and consultation with pain experts. From this pool, a candidate item bank of 56 items was selected and responses to the items were collected from large community and clinical samples. A total of 14,848 participant…
The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) developed and tested its first wave of adult self-reported health outcome item banks
Literacy-Fair Measurement of Health-Related Quality of Life Will Facilitate Comparative Effectiveness Research in Spanish-Speaking Cancer Outpatients
BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life (HRQL) assessment is frequently used in comparative effectiveness research, but low-literacy patients are often excluded. Appropriately translated and user-friendly HRQL measures are essential to ensure inclusion of low-literate and non-English-speaking patients in comparative effectiveness research. OBJECTIVES: To compare HRQL responses across literacy levels in Spanish-speaking patients with cancer usi…
Psychometric Evaluation and Calibration of Health-Related Quality of Life Item Banks
BACKGROUND: The construction and evaluation of item banks to measure unidimensional constructs of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is a fundamental objective of the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) project. OBJECTIVES: Item banks will be used as the foundation for developing short-form instruments and enabling computerized adaptive testing. The PROMIS Steering Committee selected 5 HRQOL domains for initial f…
Item Banks and Their Potential Applications to Health Status Assessment in Diverse Populations
In the context of an ethnically diverse, aging society, attention is increasingly turning to health-related quality of life measurement to evaluate healthcare and treatment options for chronic diseases. When evaluating and treating symptoms and concerns such as fatigue, pain, or physical function, reliable and accurate assessment is a priority. Modern psychometric methods have enabled us to move from long, static tests that provide inefficient an…
