Sport engagement and life satisfaction in late childhood: A population-based analysis
Background: While sport participation and physical activity are widely recognized as beneficial for children's well-being, limited research has examined how the frequency of sport engagement relates to life satisfaction (LS) in late childhood. This study aimed to (1) describe the frequency of sport participation, active transport, and LS among Norwegian children aged 10-12 years, and (2) assess the associations between sport participation frequen…
Association Between Sub-National Regional Socioeconomic Status and Childhood Obesity in Five South-East European Countries: The WHO European Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative—Cosi (2019)
Future public health efforts should take into consideration regional differences in childhood obesity prevalence, and more targeted research is essential for understanding the mechanisms of resilience and vulnerability on a sub-national level
The evolving role of creatine in public health: From food-based nutrient to supplement and beyond
Creatine is a vital bioenergetic compound that remains largely overlooked within food systems despite its well-established role in human health and performance. Unlike creatinine – a downstream breakdown product of creatine metabolism commonly measured as a biomarker of kidney function – creatine functions as an energy buffer, facilitating the rapid regeneration of ATP in tissues with high metabolic demands such as skeletal muscle, brain and hear…
Socioeconomic status, sport participation, and school-related outcomes among Norwegian adolescents: A cross-sectional analysis
Background Extensive research highlights the critical role of sport and physical activity (PA) engagement during adolescence, as it is strongly associated with enhanced subjective well-being, reduced risk of mental health problems, and prevention of chronic diseases in adulthood. Thus, it is highly important to identify key barriers of sport participation in adolescence. The present study aimed to; (1) describe socioeconomic status (SES) across d…
Burden of disease scenarios for 204 countries and territories, 2022–2050: A forecasting analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021
BACKGROUND: Future trends in disease burden and drivers of health are of great interest to policy makers and the public at large. This information can be used for policy and long-term health investment, planning, and prioritisation. We have expanded and improved upon previous forecasts produced as part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) and provide a reference forecast (the most likely future), and alternativ…
Worldwide trends in underweight and obesity from 1990 to 2022: A pooled analysis of 3663 population-representative studies with 222 million children, adolescents, and adults
BACKGROUND: Underweight and obesity are associated with adverse health outcomes throughout the life course. We estimated the individual and combined prevalence of underweight or thinness and obesity, and their changes, from 1990 to 2022 for adults and school-aged children and adolescents in 200 countries and territories. METHODS: ). For school-aged children and adolescents, we report thinness (BMI 2 SD above the median). FINDINGS: From 1990 to 20…
The relationship between perceived school stress and satisfaction with life among Norwegian school-based adolescents and the moderating role of perceived teacher care: A cross-sectional study
Higher perceived school stress was strongly inversely associated with life satisfaction in Norwegian adolescents, in both girls and boys, and in both lower and secondary school. Teacher care was identified as a moderator and seems to play a crucial part in the everyday life of Norwegian adolescents. These implications extend to teacher education, practice, and policy, which should be aware of the pivotal role of perceived teacher care on Norwegia…
Adherence to sleep recommendations is associated with higher satisfaction with life among Norwegian adolescents
Most Norwegian adolescents fail to adhere to the 8-hours of sleep recommendation and the majority feel tired at school or during activities. More than half of adolescents reported that screen time negatively affected their ability to sleep. Adhering to the sleep recommendation was associated with higher life satisfaction. Our findings highlight the importance of sufficient sleep in adolescents, while future research is needed to examine other sle…
Associations between levels of physical activity and satisfaction with life among Norwegian adolescents: A cross-sectional study
Background A robust association between physical activity (PA) and satisfaction with life (SWL) has been established, wherein self-efficacy has been identified as a mediator across different populations. However, there is a need to further examine the relationship between PA and SWL and whether self-efficacy act a as mediator within different levels of PA among Norwegian adolescents. Thus, the objective of this study was to explore the relationsh…
Molecular nutrition in life course perspective: Pinpointing metabolic pathways to target during periconception
Lifecourse nutrition encompasses nourishment from early development into parenthood. From preconception and pregnancy to childhood, late adolescence, and reproductive years, life course nutrition explores links between dietary exposures and health outcomes in current and future generations from a public health perspective, usually addressing lifestyle behaviours, reproductive well-being and maternal-child health strategies. However, nutritional f…
Worldwide trends in hypertension prevalence and progress in treatment and control from 1990 to 2019: A pooled analysis of 1201 population-representative studies with 104 million participants
BACKGROUND: Hypertension can be detected at the primary health-care level and low-cost treatments can effectively control hypertension. We aimed to measure the prevalence of hypertension and progress in its detection, treatment, and control from 1990 to 2019 for 200 countries and territories. METHODS: We used data from 1990 to 2019 on people aged 30-79 years from population-representative studies with measurement of blood pressure and data on blo…
