Calcium intake and bone quality in the elderly
As shown in older participants in the Ten‐State (U.S.A.) Nutrition Survey, there is at best a low order, barely significant relationship between daily calcium intake (mg/day) and metacarpal cortical area (CA) prior to partialling for caloric intake. This finding, based on 1435 subjects, does not support the assumption that adult bone loss is a product of low or inadequate intake of calcium
Relationships between sugar‐foods and the DMFT in 1968–1970
As shown in a sample of 2514 adolescent participants in the Ten‐State Nutrition Survey of The United States, there is a systematic relation between sugar‐food intakes and dental caries as shown by the DMFT index. Analyzed with respect to the DMFT, adolescents with high values of the DMFT reported sugar‐food ingestion ten times greater than did comparable adolescents with low DMFT values. Conversely, boys and girls and blacks and whites deemed hig…
Sugar‐food intake of obese and lean adolescents
Dietary intake data on 4907 adolescent participants in the Ten‐State Nutrition Survey of the U.S.A. show no higher intake of sugar‐foods for obese participants than for lean participants of the same age, sex and race. These findings are consistent with other evidence that obesity is not associated with an increased preference for sucrose‐containing foods and suggest that taste is not a factor in adolescent obesity
