  • Dietary patterns among Afghan adults and their associations with overweight and obesity: A cross-sectional study in Kandahar, Afghanistan

Open Access•Mohammad Sediq Sahrai, Laure Dossus et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Three distinct dietary patterns were identified among Afghan adults from Kandahar. Weak positive associations were found between the Western dietary pattern and general and central obesity. Associations of fruits and vegetables and traditional dietary patterns with obesity deserve further evaluation in a larger sample and with more detailed dietary intake assessment methods that also consider preparation methods and food processing

  • Adherence to the South African food based dietary guidelines may reduce breast cancer risk in black South African women: The South African Breast Cancer (Sabc) study

    Open Access•Inarie Jacobs, Christine Taljaard-Krugell et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2022

Objective: To determine the level of adherence and to assess the association between higher adherence to the South African food based dietary guidelines (SAFBDG) and breast cancer risk. Design: Population-based, case–control study (the South African Breast Cancer study) matched on age and demographic settings. Validated questionnaires were used to collect dietary and epidemiological data. To assess adherence to the SAFBDG, a nine-point adherence …

  • Rising rural body-mass index is the main driver of the global obesity epidemic in adults

Open Access•NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, Honor Bixby et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2019

Body-mass index (BMI) has increased steadily in most countries in parallel with a rise in the proportion of the population who live in cities 1,2 . This has led to a widely reported view that urbanization is one of the most important drivers of the global rise in obesity 3–6 . Here we use 2,009 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight in more than 112 million adults, to report national, regional and global trends in mean B…

  • Temporal trends in food group availability and cancer incidence in Africa: An ecological analysis

Open Access•Elom K Aglago, Francesca Bray et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2019

Objective: We evaluated the relationship between food availability, as the only dietary exposure data available across Africa, and age-standardised cancer incidence rates (ASR) in eighteen countries. Design: Ecological study. Setting: Availability of food groups and dietary energy was considered for five hypothetical time points: years of collection of ASR ( T 0 ) and 5, 10, 15 and 20 preceding years ( T –5 , T –10 , T –15 , T –20 ). Ecological c…

  • Relative validation of the adapted Mediterranean Diet Score for Adolescents by comparison with nutritional biomarkers and nutrient and food intakes: The Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Ado…

    Open Access•Raquel Aparicio-Ugarriza, Raquel Aparicio‐Ugarriza et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2019

Objective: To investigate whether adherence to the adapted Mediterranean Diet Score for Adolescents (MDS_A) and the adapted Mediterranean Diet Quality Index for Adolescents (KIDMED_A) is associated with better food/nutrient intakes and nutritional biomarkers. Design: The Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence (HELENA) study is a cross-sectional study aiming to obtain comparable data on a variety of nutritional and health-related …

  • Worldwide trends in blood pressure from 1975 to 2015: A pooled analysis of 1479 population-based measurement studies with 19·1 million participants

Open Access•Bin Zhou, James Bentham et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2017

BACKGROUND: Raised blood pressure is an important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and chronic kidney disease. We estimated worldwide trends in mean systolic and mean diastolic blood pressure, and the prevalence of, and number of people with, raised blood pressure, defined as systolic blood pressure of 140 mm Hg or higher or diastolic blood pressure of 90 mm Hg or higher. METHODS: For this analysis, we pooled national, subnational, or comm…

  • Worldwide trends in body-mass index, underweight, overweight, and obesity from 1975 to 2016: A pooled analysis of 2416 population-based measurement studies in 128·9 million children, adolescents, and …

    Open Access•Leandra Abarca-Gómez, Ziad Abdeen et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2017

BACKGROUND: Underweight, overweight, and obesity in childhood and adolescence are associated with adverse health consequences throughout the life-course. Our aim was to estimate worldwide trends in mean body-mass index (BMI) and a comprehensive set of BMI categories that cover underweight to obesity in children and adolescents, and to compare trends with those of adults. METHODS: We pooled 2416 population-based studies with measurements of height…

  • Dietary sources and sociodemographic and lifestyle factors affecting vitamin D and calcium intakes in European adolescents: The Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence (Helena) Study

Open Access•Cristina Julián, Theodora Mouratidou et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2017

Objective To investigate dietary sources of Ca and vitamin D (VitD) intakes, and the associated sociodemographic and lifestyle factors, among European adolescents. Design Linear regression mixed models were used to examine sex-specific associations of Ca and VitD intakes with parental education, family affluence (FAS), physical activity and television (TV) watching while controlling for age, Tanner stage, energy intake and diet quality. Setting T…

  • Vegetarianism and meat consumption: A comparison of attitudes and beliefs between vegetarian, semi-vegetarian, and omnivorous subjects in Belgium

  • Association of Leisure-Time Physical Activity With Risk of 26 Types of Cancer in 1.44 Million Adults

    Steven C Moore, I-Min Lee et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Internal Medicine•2016

IMPORTANCE: Leisure-time physical activity has been associated with lower risk of heart-disease and all-cause mortality, but its association with risk of cancer is not well understood. OBJECTIVE: To determine the association of leisure-time physical activity with incidence of common types of cancer and whether associations vary by body size and/or smoking. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We pooled data from 12 prospective US and European cohor…

  • Remembering Wartime Experiences: The Role of Spirituality Among Retired Military Nurses

Irene Gilliland, Julie Nadeau et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Spirituality in Mental…•2010

Little is known about whether spirituality and religious beliefs were mechanisms of coping and support for nurses serving in the military during a war and if and how these beliefs changed over time. A qualitative study using a phenomenological approach yielded four distinct themes for military nurses serving during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. These themes were caring, connections, compartmentalization, and adaptability. Although religious r…
