Influence of Sex and Body Composition on Aerobic Capacity in Normal Weight Lean, Normal Weight Obese, and Obese Phenotypes
Normal weight obesity (NWO) is a body composition phenotype that is associated with increased cardiometabolic risk and is characterized by a normal weight body mass index but elevated body fat. The purpose of this study was to determine sex differences in aerobic capacity across body composition phenotypes, including normal weight lean (NWL), NWO, and traditional obesity (OB). We recruited 60 participants according to three body composition pheno…
The acute inflammatory effects of weight stigma
Weight stigma is a chronic stressor and may contribute to cardiometabolic health risk. This pilot study tests an experimental protocol exploring acute inflammation as a potential biological mechanism connecting weight stigma and disease risk. Preliminary effect sizes and protocol feasibility were assessed. Women ( N =44, 68% white) with overweight/obesity ( M BMI =33.2±6.7 kg/m 2 ) were randomized to either weight stigma ( n =22) or control ( n =…
Associations between internalized weight stigma and visceral adipose tissue status are observed in women but not men
Internalization of weight stigma was associated with greater visceral adiposity in women across the BMI spectrum, suggesting it as a chronic stressor. Future studies should investigate directionality and causality of this relationship to elucidate mechanisms of stigma-associated CVD risk
