Adiposity and reproductive characteristics across the lifespan
BACKGROUND: Reproductive characteristics significantly shape physiological adaptations, little is known about how they relate to adiposity in women of multi-ethnic regions undergoing a rapid increase in obesity burden. This study aims to address this gap by assessing how reproductive patterns correlate with adiposity and identifying potential moderating factors among Chinese adults. METHODS: In 2018–2019, 107,679 participants from the Regional Et…
Dietary quality across the life course and metabolic syndrome
Background The global prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) among young adults has reached 17.4%. We examined associations of three dietary indices and life-course dietary quality trajectories with MetS and its components using a birth cohort. Methods Participants from rural western China were followed at four time points: infancy, school age, adolescence, and young adulthood (mean age 20 years). Three dietary indices—Dietary Diversity Score (D…
Maternal Gestational Weight Status and Offspring Physical Growth Status at Birth, Mid‐Childhood and Early Adolescence
Maternal adiposity has been identified as a predictor of child overweight/obesity; however, it remains unclear whether the association changes as the child ages. We aimed to examine the associations between maternal weight status during pregnancy and offspring physical growth from birth to early adolescence using data from a birth cohort study in rural western China. Maternal weight measurements during the first, second and third trimesters were …
Associations of antenatal micronutrient supplementation with adolescent blood pressure

Associations between gestational weight gain under different guidelines and adverse birth outcomes
Several gestational weight gain (GWG) guidelines have been established based on monocenter or multicenter researches. We aimed to examine the associations between categories of GWG under the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommendation guideline, the Chinese National Health Commission (NHC) guideline, and weight-gain-for-gestational-age z-scores derived from the INTERGROWTH-21 st Project and adverse birth outcomes. We used data from an antenatal mi…
Associations of parental age at pregnancy with adolescent cognitive development and emotional and behavioural problems
At conception, older maternal age was independently linked to better adolescent cognitive development, whereas advanced paternal age was independently associated with a greater risk of adolescent emotional and behavioral problems. These findings suggest that public health policies targeting an optimal parental age at pregnancy should be developed in the context of offspring developmental consequences
Associations between life-course household wealth mobility and adolescent physical growth, cognitive development and emotional and behavioral problems
Background: Parental household wealth has been shown to be associated with offspring health conditions, while inconsistent associations were reported among generally healthy population especially in low- and middle- income countries (LMICs). Whether the household wealth upward mobility in LMICs would confer benefits to child health remains unknown. Methods: We conducted a prospective birth cohort of children born to mothers who participated in a …
How the marketing practices of commercial milk formula companies impact infant breastfeeding practices in China
BACKGROUND: The marketing practices used by commercial milk formula (CMF) companies undermine breast feeding. However, it remains unclear how specific types of marketing practices result in suboptimal breast feeding. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to examine the associations of CMF marketing practices with breastfeeding outcomes, determine the influencing pathways, how it changes the perceptions and attitudes of mothers towards CMF, and how it impacts brea…
Association of sleep behavior with depression
Sleep duration and sleep problems are associated with depression. Enough sleep time and healthy sleep habits in life course might be a practical health promotion approach to reduce depression risk in Northwest Chinese adults. A further study from cohort study is needed to verify the temporal association
Association between physical activity and major adverse cardiovascular events in northwest China
Background To examine the association between daily physical activity (PA) and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in northwest China. Methods The data in this analysis were part of the baseline survey of the Regional Ethnic Cohort Study in Northwest China from June 2018 to May 2019 in Shaanxi Province. This study used standardized self-reported total physical activity (continuous and categorical variables) and self-reported outcomes of M…
Risk Assessment for Birth Defects in Offspring of Chinese Pregnant Women
We developed a nomogram risk model for any type of birth defect in a Chinese population based on important modifying factors in pregnant women. This risk-prediction model could be a tool for clinicians to assess the risk of birth defects and promote health education
Anemia and associated factors among adolescent girls and boys at 10–14 years in rural western China
Anemia was a mild public health problem among young adolescents in rural western China. Nutritional and social determinants were identified as predictors, warranting interventions to reduce the risk of anemia among this critical age group
Effect of Parental Migration on the Intellectual and Physical Development of Early School-Aged Children in Rural China
Our results emphasized the impairment of both-parental migration in intellectual function (FSIQ, PRI, PSI) of children. These findings have important policy implications for the Chinese government to prevent the impairment of left-behind children. Further research is required to clarify the mechanisms by which both-parental migration influence the impairment in intellectual function of children
Neonatal mortality and associated factors in the specialized neonatal care unit Asmara, Eritrea
Low birth weight, late admission, low apgar scores and congenital abnormalities were significantly associated with neonatal mortality in the Specialized Neonatal Care Unit. Early management of low birth weight, preterm births, and neonatal complications should be the priority issues for controlling local neonatal deaths
Global benchmarking of children's exposure to television advertising of unhealthy foods and beverages across 22 countries
Restricting children's exposures to marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages is a global obesity prevention priority. Monitoring marketing exposures supports informed policymaking. This study presents a global overview of children's television advertising exposure to healthy and unhealthy products. Twenty‐two countries contributed data, captured between 2008 and 2017. Advertisements were coded for the nature of foods and beverages, using the 20…
Maternal exposure to PM2.5 may increase the risk of congenital hypothyroidism in the offspring
The present study suggested that maternal exposure to PM 2.5 may exhibit a positive association with increased risk of CH in the offspring. We also proposed a cut-off value of PM 2.5 exposure that might determine reduction in the risk of CH in the offspring in highly polluted areas
Maternal Dietary Patterns during Pregnancy and Congenital Heart Defects
Limited studies investigating the relationships between dietary patterns and congenital heart defects (CHDs) are available. This study aimed to explore the associations between dietary patterns and CHDs risk in Shaanxi, China. We conducted a hospital-based case-control study and included a total of 474 cases and 948 controls. Pregnant women waiting for delivery in the hospital were interviewed to report their diets during pregnancy using a valida…

Objective To describe nutrient intakes, characterize dietary patterns and analyse their associations with sociodemographic characteristics among pregnant women in Shaanxi, China. Design Population-based cross-sectional survey. Setting Twenty counties and ten districts in Shaanxi Province of Northwest China, 2013. Subjects Women ( n 7462) were recruited using a stratified multistage random sampling method to report diets during pregnancy, at 0–12 …
Sex differences in the intellectual functioning of early school-aged children in rural China
There is no evidence to suggest sex differences in the general intelligence of early school-aged children in rural China. However, a difference in general intelligence between 10-year-old boys and girls was evident. Girls and boys in rural China tended to show different specific cognitive abilities
The extent and nature of television food advertising to children in Xi’an, China
The majority of food advertisements were for unhealthy food. More unhealthy food ads were shown in children's non-peak time and afternoon as well as non-children's channels. More children-oriented persuasive marketing tactics were used in unhealthy food ads especially in non-children's channels. Therefore, intervening in the entrance of unhealthy foods into the market and establishing regulations related to food advertising especially unhealthy f…
Predictors for neonatal death in the rural areas of Shaanxi Province of Northwestern China
Public health interventions directed at reducing neonatal death should address the socioeconomic factors and maternal health service utilization, which significantly influence neonatal mortality in rural China. Multipara, low educational level of the women, availability of prenatal visits in the first trimester of pregnancy and hospital delivery should be considered when planning the interventions to reduce the neonatal mortality in rural areas
Children's exposure to food advertising on free-to-air television
There is an established link between food promotions and children's food purchase and consumption. Children in developing countries may be more vulnerable to food promotions given the relative novelty of advertising in these markets. This study aimed to determine the scope of television food advertising to children across the Asia-Pacific to inform policies to restrict this marketing. Six sites were sampled, including from China, Indonesia, Malay…
Risk of childhood undernutrition related to small-for-gestational age and preterm birth in low- and middle-income countries
BACKGROUND: Low- and middle-income countries continue to experience a large burden of stunting; 148 million children were estimated to be stunted, around 30-40% of all children in 2011. In many of these countries, foetal growth restriction (FGR) is common, as is subsequent growth faltering in the first 2 years. Although there is agreement that stunting involves both prenatal and postnatal growth failure, the extent to which FGR contributes to stu…
Health-related quality of life and long-term care needs among elderly individuals living alone
For elderly persons living alone, factors such as chronic disease, lower income level and living in a rural area may limit their ability to form social relationships. Reducing the level of loneliness, with better care and support, may be helpful in improving their HRQoL. There is a need for an overall improvement in the planning, provision and financing of long-term care and psychogeriatric services for elderly individuals living alone in China
