  • Prevalence of primary dysmenorrhea and its associated factors among adolescent girls in a rural setting of Pakistan

Open Access•Naureen Rehman, Muzna Hashmi et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2026

Primary dysmenorrhea (PD) is prevalent among adolescent girls but understudied in rural Pakistan. This study examines the prevalence of PD and its associated factors among girls aged 10–19 in a rural district of Pakistan. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in the district of Tando Mohammad Khan (TMK) among post-menarchal girls aged 10–19 using a multistage cluster random sampling. Analyses were conducted using STATA 15.0, with multivariable l…

Open Access•Rafay Iqbal, Asra Qureshi et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

The objective of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of cardiometabolic multimorbidity and symptoms of common mental disorders, including depression, anxiety, and stress, and association between the two, in primary care clinics for low-income, urban population in Karachi, Pakistan. We performed a descriptive cross-sectional study at two primary healthcare clinics, catering predominantly to low-income families in Karachi. Adults, aged 30 year…

  • Prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its association with cardiovascular disease risk and common risk factors amongst healthcare workers in Pakistan

    Open Access•Unab I Khan, Sonya F Khan et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at a higher risk of CVD. However, little is known about the association between MetS and CVD risk in healthcare workers in Pakistan. We aimed to assess the prevalence of MetS and its components and examined the association between MetS and 10-year CVD-risk using Framingham Risk Score (FRS) and common CVD risk factors amongst H…

  • Sex differences in risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM)

Open Access•Taimoor Ahmad, Aisha Tauqir et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a growing global public health concern, especially in Pakistan where an estimated 33 million people (aged 20–79 years) have diabetes. This pilot study explores T2DM risk using FINDRISC scoring, and examines participants’ knowledge, attitudes, and costs of care related to T2DM across sexes.Adult participants (aged 25–65 years) residing in a low-income neighborhood in Rawalpindi, Pakistan were selected using multi…

  • Burden of cardiometabolic diseases and depression in a low-income, urban community in Pakistan

Open Access•Unab I Khan, Sabeen Shah et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

This study highlights the significant burden of CMDs, multimorbidity, and depression in a low-income urban community in Pakistan. The findings suggest that a cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM) epidemic is emerging in urban Pakistan, emphasizing the need for integrated interventions addressing physical, mental, economic, and environmental factors in CMD management

  • Using rapid antigen testing for early, safe return-to-work for healthcare personnel after Sars-CoV-2 infection in a healthcare system in Pakistan

Open Access•Unab I Khan, Syed Faisal Mahmood et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

Anticipating staff shortage during the Omicron variant surge, we modified the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s contingency guidelines at a healthcare system in Pakistan. Infected staff had a SARS-CoV-2 rapid antigen test after 5–7 days of isolation, to decide a safe return-to-work. This led to signifcant cost savings without compromising patient/staff safety
