  • Alabama Veterans Rural Health Initiative: A Pilot Study of Enhanced Community Outreach in Rural Areas

    Open Access•Michelle M Hilgeman, Ann F Mahaney‐Price et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2014

PURPOSE: Access, enrollment, and engagement with primary and specialty health care services present significant challenges for rural populations worldwide. The Alabama Veterans Rural Health Initiative evaluated an innovative outreach intervention combining motivational interviewing, patient navigation, and health services education to promote utilization of the United States Veterans Administration Healthcare System (VA) by veterans who live in r…

  • Patient‐Level and Practice‐Level Characteristics Associated with Receipt of Preventive Dental Services: 48‐Month Incidence

Open Access•Gregg H Gilbert, James D Bader et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2008

One preventive procedure was common; the other was uncommon. However, practices did not effectively target high-risk patients for either procedure. Instead, both services were typically received by persons with the least need for them. These findings are consistent with the conclusion that practitioners greatly influenced the delivery of fluoride services, with substantial contributions also made by patient-level predisposing and enabling factors…

  • Racial Differences in Baseline Treatment Preference as Predictors of Receiving a Dental Extraction Versus Root Canal Therapy During 48 Months of Follow‐Up

Open Access•Michael J Boykin, Gregg H Gilbert et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2008

Baseline treatment preference strongly predicts subsequent receipt of EXT versus root canal treatment. Racial differences in treatment received during follow-up were explained by baseline racial differences in treatment preference, tooth mobility, and periodontal status

  • Validation-study conclusions from dietary reports by fourth-grade children observed eating school meals are generalisable to dietary reports by comparable children not observed

Open Access•Albert F Smith, Suzanne Domel Baxter et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2007

Objective To investigate the effect of observing school meals on children's dietary reports. Subjects and setting One hundred and twenty children randomly selected, but with half girls, from usual school-meal eaters among 312 volunteers (from all 443 fourth-grade children in six schools in one district). Design Children were assigned randomly to one of 12 conditions yielded by crossing observation status (observed; not observed), target period (p…

  • Effect of Dental Practice Characteristics on Racial Disparities in Patient-Specific Tooth Loss

    Gregg H Gilbert, Richard M Shewchuk et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2006•References: 30

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that dental practice characteristics are associated with tooth loss incidence with both tooth-specific and patient-specific characteristics already taken into account. RESEARCH DESIGN: A population-based prospective cohort study was conducted. In-person interviews and clinical examinations were done at baseline, 24, and 48 months, with telephone interviews every 6 months. Practices…

  • Morphological differences between minicolumns in human and nonhuman primate cortex

    Open Access•Daniel P Buxhoeveden, Andrew E Switala et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2001•Cited by: 2•References: 78

Our study performed a quantitative investigation of minicolumns in the planum temporale (PT) of human, chimpanzee, and rhesus monkey brains. This analysis distinguished minicolumns in the human cortex from those of the other nonhuman primates. Human cell columns are larger, contain more neuropil space, and pack more cells into the core area of the column than those of the other primates tested. Because the minicolumn is a basic anatomical and fun…
