  • Associations Between Exposure to Air Pollution and Gestational Hypertension in Urban Halifax

A Poirier, Abbey E Poirier et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2015

Introduction Exposure to air pollution has been linked with an increased risk for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Few studies have examined possible associations between air pollution and gestational hypertension (GH). The prevalence of GH in Canada is approximately 6%, translating into roughly 300 women developing GH in Halifax annually. GH disorders account for 2–8% of pregnancy complications worldwide. Objective The current study exami…

Open Access•Jane Gallagher, Edward Hudgens et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

Based on an integrative design, the MICA study provides an opportunity to evaluate complex relationships between environmental factors, physiological biomarkers, genetic susceptibility and health outcomes. PROJECT APPROVAL: IRB Number 05-EPA-2637: The human subjects' research protocol was reviewed by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of the University of North Carolina; the IRB of Westat, Inc., the IRB of the Henry Ford Health System; and EPA'…

  • Lead toxicity and iron deficiency in Utah migrant children

    Stephen Ratcliffe, S D Ratcliffe et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1989•Cited by: 1•References: 22

We determined the frequency of presumptive iron deficiency and lead toxicity in 198 Utah migrant children, ages 9-72 months, during the summer of 1985. There were no confirmed cases of lead toxicity. Thirteen per cent of those tested and 30 per cent of the children ages 9-23 months were iron deficient. Hematocrit determinations accurately predicted iron deficiency in only 35 per cent of the children confirmed to have this disorder via erythrocyte…
