Empowering our people
Purpose Substance use and sexual risk‐taking have been shown to co‐occur. Programs focused on sexually transmitted infections (STIs) reduction may benefit substance‐using, particularly binge substance‐using, adults. This is especially true for rural Native American communities who endure sexual and substance use disparities and have few STI risk reduction programs. This study explores factors predicting retention in an STI risk reduction program …
Enacted Sexual Minority Stigma, Psychological Distress, and Sexual and Drug Risk Behaviors Among Urban Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM)
Urban Black men who have sex with men (MSM) bear a disproportionate burden of HIV and syphilis in the U.S. Experiences of enacted sexual minority stigma and psychological distress among these men may be associated with HIV/STI sexual and drug risk behaviors. The objective was to determine the associations between enacted sexual minority stigma, psychological distress, and sexual and drug risk behaviors. In an urban prospective cohort study, surve…
HIV Transmission Potential and Sex Partner Concurrency
We determined whether racial disparities in HIV infection among gay and bisexual men (MSM) may be partially explained by racial differences in the HIV transmission potential (i.e. mixing of people living with HIV and people not living with HIV or of unknown HIV serostatus) and density (i.e. sex partner concurrency) of sexual networks. Data included a behavioral survey, testing for HIV, and an egocentric sexual network survey. Mixed effects logist…
Giving syphilis and gonorrhea to friends
Eliciting friendship networks of people diagnosed with syphilis and gonorrhea may find members of their sexual networks, drug use networks, or people of similar STI risk. Friendship networks include more diagnosed cases of syphilis and gonorrhea than sexual networks alone, especially among populations with many non-disclosing men who have sex with men (MSM) and women who have sex with women (WSW). Future research should evaluate whether this frie…
Overlapping Transmission Networks of Early Syphilis and/or Newly HIV Diagnosed Gay, Bisexual and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM)
Syphilis and HIV among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM) are syndemic suggesting current prevention strategies are not effective. Sex partner meeting places and their networks may yield effective and optimal interventions. From 2009 to 2017, 57 unique venues were reported by > 1 MSM and 7.0% (n = 4), 21.1% (n = 12) and 71.9% (n = 41) were classified as syphilis, HIV or co-diagnosed venues, respectively. Forty-nine venues wer…

Building Partnerships and Stakeholder Relationships for HIV Prevention
The COPR model maximized inclusiveness and participation of African American women impacted by HIV, supported recruitment and retention, and was the cornerstone of community engagement
Empowering our people’ to address depression, violence, and sexual risk among Native Americans with recent binge alcohol use
Background: This study was launched in response to an American Indian (AI) community's concern regarding the comorbid occurrence of substance use, poor mental health, and other risk factors on sexual health. The purpose of this manuscript was to assess the relationship between alcohol use, violence, depression and STI/HIV risk behaviors on the frequency of unprotected sex acts and number of sexual partners among AI adults. Methods: Specifically, …
Risk and Protective Factors Associated With Lifetime Sexual Experience Among Rural, Reservation-Based American Indian Youth
Testing the efficacy of a brief sexual risk reduction intervention among high-risk American Indian adults
Clinical Trials NCT02513225
The Respecting the Circle of Life trial for American Indian adolescents
This paper describes the rationale, design, methods, and baseline results of a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the impact of an adapted evidence-based intervention (EBI), "Respecting the Circle of Life" (RCL) to reduce behavioral risks for HIV/AIDS among American Indian (AI) adolescents. A participatory approach shaped intervention adaptation and study design. A total of 267 participants (aged 13-19) were randomized by peer groups of the …
Respecting the circle of life
Potential for widespread transmission of HIV/AIDS among American Indian (AI) adolescents exists, yet no evidence-based interventions (EBIs) have been adapted and evaluated with this population. Intensive psychoeducation may improve knowledge and decision-making which could potentially translate to reductions in HIV risk behaviors. A peer group randomized controlled comparison of an adapted EBI vs. control was delivered over an eight-day summer ba…
Sexual Behaviors of US Women at Risk of HIV Acquisition
Violence Against Women in Selected Areas of the United States
Objectives. We determined the prevalence of recent emotional, physical, and sexual violence against women and their associations with HIV-related risk factors in women living in the United States. Methods. We performed an assessment of women ages 18 to 44 years with a history of unprotected sex and 1 or more personal or partner HIV risk factors in the past 6 months from 2009 to 2010. We used multivariable logistic regression to examine the associ…
Prevalence and Correlates of Knowledge of Male Partner HIV Testing and Serostatus Among African-American Women Living in High Poverty, High HIV Prevalence Communities (HPTN 064)
What Do We Know About Males and Emergency Contraception? A Synthesis of the Literature
CONTEXT: Unintended pregnancy rates are high in the United States. It is important to know whether improving males' access to emergency contraceptive pills may help prevent unintended pregnancy, especially in cases of -condom failure. METHODS: A search of the PubMed, PsycINFO and Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature databases was conducted to identify studies published from January 1980 to April 2011 concerning males and emerg…
