  • Lessons From the Study of Immigrant Mortality

    Open Access•Michael Marmot, M G Marmot et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•1984

  • Selection and mortality differentials

    A J Fox, Peter Goldblatt et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1982•Cited by: 23•References: 3

The Office of Population Censuses and Surveys Longitudinal Study provides reliable mortality data by a much wider range of characteristics than are available for other national sources. Although it is based on only a 1% sample of the population, it broadens the scope of mortality analysis and permits study of changes in relationships using different aspects of the time dimension. Data from this study have made us increasingly aware of the importa…

  • Mortality and cause of death in Down's syndrome

    R Balarajan, S Donnan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1982•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Mortality in sufferers from Down's syndrome over the age of 1 year in the 1970s was analysed using the Wessex Mental Handicap Register linked to the NHS Central Register. Of the 1045 subjects, 37 died during the period of the study; the standardised mortality ratio based on England and Wales mortality was 5.39. Mortality ratios were high between the ages of 1 and 14 compared with older ages. Bronchopneumonia and congenital heart disease were the …

  • Comparison of cause of death coding on death certificates with coding in the Royal College of General Practitioners Oral Contraception Study

    S J Wingrave, Valerie Beral et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1981•Cited by: 1•References: 3

A comparison has been made between the coding of the cause of death by (a) the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) during the Oral Contraception Study and (b) the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys (OPCS) or the General Register Office for Scotland (GRO) on death certificates for the same subjects. Broad grouping of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) showed close agreement between RCGP and OPCS or GRO coding for a…

  • Changing social-class distribution of heart disease.

    Open Access•Michael Marmot, M G Marmot et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ•1978

Analysis of mortality trends over 40 years in England and Wales showed that mortality from coronary heart disease had become progressively more common in working-class men and women than in those from the middle and upper classes. The change was most noticeable for men. Whereas in 1931 and 1951 heart disease was more common in men of social classes I and II, by 1961 it was more common in men of classes IV and V. This change in social-class distri…

  • Policies of the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys. Philosophy and constraints

    A M Adelstein•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1976

The Medical Division of the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys (OPCS) organizes and indexes general systems of records for medical research and administration. The main sources of records are the census, registrations of births and of deaths, hospital discharge records, registered cases of cancer and of congenital malformations, surveys by the Social Surveys Division, and samples of records in general practice. Results take the form of reg…

  • Cancer mortality and saccharin consumption in diabetics

    B Armstrong, Bruce K Armstrong et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1976•References: 3

The mortality experience of 5971 members of the British Diabetic Association (BDA) was followed-up for between five and eight years to mid-1973. Overall, 1207 deaths occurred compared with 778 expected from the mortality of the population of England and Wales in 1972. This excess of deaths was due almost entirely to diabetes mellitus and ischaemic heart disease. Deaths from cancer (128) were significantly fewer than expected (168), mainly because…

  • Mutiple-cause analysis of deaths of patients treated with radio-iodine

    J W Donovan, A M Adelstein•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1974•References: 1

  • Mortality from carcinoma of the uterus. An international cohort study

    A M Adelstein, Gerry Hill et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1971•References: 1

  • Some Aspects of Cardio-vascular Mortality in South Africa

    A M Adelstein•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1963•References: 15

In many countries cardiovascular diseases, parti- cularly coronary artery disease and hypertension, are the major cause of death and disability in adult life (Puffer and Verhoestrate, 1958). There are wide variations in the reported mortality rates from coronary artery disease both between countries and, within countries, between communities and between the sexes. The mortality from coronary artery disease among White males of the U.S.A. is an ex…
