WHO launches global network of institutes to strengthen capacity for health inequality monitoring
This article introduces the global WHO-managed Health Inequality Monitoring Network, which is dedicated to strengthening and expanding health inequality monitoring practices at global, regional and country levels. Launched in 2025, the Health Inequality Monitoring Network consists of 12 inaugural institutional members, represented by over 140 affiliated individuals spanning all world regions. The Network aims to: strengthen capacities for health …
Effective coverage of newborn postnatal care
Background: High-quality postnatal care (PNC) is essential for newborn survival. However, newborn PNC coverage indicators do not reflect the quality of care received. We estimated effective coverage of newborn PNC by incorporating content of care and calculated the contact-content gap in 32 low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). Methods: Using household survey data from 32 LMICs, we defined effective coverage of newborn PNC as the proportion of…
Building an effective coverage cascade for antenatal care
Background: Substantial gaps exist between pregnant women's contact with health facilities and the quality of care they receive (effective coverage) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). An effective coverage cascade is a useful analytical approach to uncover gaps due to poor facility service readiness and quality of care. We estimated readiness-adjusted antenatal care (ANC) coverage and built an effective coverage cascade in countries wit…
Inequities in effective coverage of family planning services in low- and middle-income countries
Background: Despite decades of family planning (FP) programme successes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), women still face an unmet need for contraceptives, as well as inequalities in coverage. Including elements of service readiness in FP intervention coverage measures will better inform population-level programme performance. Methods: We identified five LMICs that had health facility and household surveys conducted <5 years apart wit…
Health service readiness and quality for sick child care
Background: Most child deaths can be averted through prompt and appropriate treatment of child illnesses such as pneumonia, diarrhoea, and malaria. However, research has suggested that increases in care seeking do not necessarily mean that quality care is being received. We assessed the service readiness and process quality of curative healthcare during childhood and determined whether children are receiving health services with sufficient qualit…
Challenges in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality in Niger
INTRODUCTION: Recent modelled estimates suggest that Niger made progress in maternal mortality since 2000. However, neonatal mortality has not declined since 2012 and maternal mortality estimates were based on limited data. We researched the drivers of progress and challenges. METHODS: We reviewed two decades of health policies, analysed mortality trends from United Nations data and six national household surveys between 1998 and 2021 and assesse…
Effective multi-sectoral approach for rapid reduction in maternal and neonatal mortality
BACKGROUND: Bangladesh experienced impressive reductions in maternal and neonatal mortality over the past several decades with annual rates of decline surpassing 4% since 2000. We comprehensively assessed health system and non-health factors that drove Bangladesh's success in mortality reduction. METHODS: We operationalised a comprehensive conceptual framework and analysed available household surveys for trends and inequalities in mortality, inte…
Quality adjusted coverage of family planning services in low- and middle-income countries
Background: Monitoring service quality for family planning programmes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) has been challenging due to data availability. Self-reported service quality from Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) can provide additional information on quality beyond simple service contact. Methods: The DHS collects need, use and counselling for contraceptives. We used this data from 33 LMICs to develop quality-adjusted demand f…
Effective Coverage of Modern Contraceptive Use in Ethiopia
The increase in contraceptive prevalence rate (crude coverage) in Ethiopia over the past two decades does not necessarily reflect service quality, and although the proportion of women with unmet needs has decreased, it remains unacceptably high. Hence, this study aimed to estimate the effective coverage (EC) of modern contraceptive methods in Ethiopia, considering the quality of care. We used nationally representative surveys, such as health faci…
Climate shocks and nutrition
Niger is afflicted with high rates of poverty, high fertility rates, frequent environmental crises, and climate change. Recurrent droughts and floods have led to chronic food insecurity linked to poor maternal and neonatal nutrition outcomes in vulnerable regions. We analyzed maternal and neonatal nutrition trends and subnational variability between 2000 and 2021 with a focus on the implementation of policies and programs surrounding two acute cl…
Measuring Quality of Maternal, Neonatal, Child, Reproductive Health and Nutrition Care with tools developed by the Radar project and tested in Sub Saharan Africa
Increasing coverage of evidence-based maternal, neonatal, child, reproductive health and nutrition (MNCRHN) programs in low- and middle-income countries has coincided with dramatic improvements in health despite variable quality of implementation. Comprehensive evaluation to inform program improvement requires standardized but adaptable tools, which the Real Accountability, Data Analysis for Results (RADAR) project has developed. To inform select…
Trends and inequalities in the nutritional status of adolescent girls and adult women in sub-Saharan Africa since 2000
INTRODUCTION: Evidence on the rate at which the double burden of malnutrition unfolds is limited. We quantified trends and inequalities in the nutritional status of adolescent girls and adult women in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: We analysed 102 Demographic and Health Surveys between 1993 and 2017 from 35 countries. We assessed regional trends through cross-sectional series analyses and ran multilevel linear regression models to estimate the aver…
Discordance in postnatal care between mothers and newborns
BACKGROUND: Postnatal care (PNC) for mothers and newborns is essential to monitor risks of morbidity and adverse conditions following delivery. Current estimates of the coverage of PNC show substantial discordance between mothers and newborns. We investigate the sources of this discordance in Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS). METHODS: We used DHS data from 48 countries collected since 2011, spanning phases 6 and 7 of the survey program with 3…
Building integrated data systems for health and nutrition program evaluations
G lobally, we have more data on population health than ever before. In the era of "big data", the challenge is not only to collect data but also to make use and sense of what is already there.Countries have a wealth of information on maternal, newborn and child health and nutrition (MNCH&N) programs and impact but it is dispersed through a variety of sources, and sometimes difficult for policy and program decision-makers to access, analyze and dev…
Explaining progress towards Millennium Development Goal 4 for child survival in Tanzania
BACKGROUND: As one of several countries that pledged to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Mozambique sought to reduce child, neonatal, and maternal mortality by two thirds by 2015. This study examines the impact of Mozambique's efforts between 1997 and 2015, highlighting the increases in intervention coverage that contributed to saving the most lives. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of available household survey data was conducte…

Assessment of the impact of quality improvement interventions on the quality of sick child care provided by Health Extension Workers in Ethiopia
BACKGROUND: Ethiopia has scaled up integrated community case management of childhood illness (iCCM), including several interventions to improve the performance of Health Extension Workers (HEWs). We assessed associations between interventions to improve iCCM quality of care and the observed quality of care among HEWs. METHODS: We assessed iCCM implementation strength and quality of care provided by HEWs in Ethiopia. Multivariate logistic regressi…
Monitoring iCCM
Most countries in sub-Saharan Africa have now adopted integrated community case management (iCCM) of common childhood illnesses as a strategy to improve child health. In March 2014, the iCCM Task Force published an Indicator Guide for Monitoring and Evaluating iCCM: a 'menu' of recommended indicators with globally agreed definitions and methodology, to guide countries in developing robust iCCM monitoring systems. The Indicator Guide was conceived…
Language Background and Assessment in the Physical Sciences
A project was initiated at the University of Technology, Sydney to look at the role of language and gender in assessment of first‐year university students in Physics. Research on student learning has shown that assessment, to a large extent, determines the curriculum for students and their approaches to learning. Assessment plays a crucial role in students’ interest and motivation in a subject and the quality of their learning outcomes. In this p…
