  • Through the Eye

Open Access•Véronique Small, Aline Philibert et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

Since the 1960s, Grassy Narrows First Nation, Canada, has been exposed to methylmercury (MeHg) from fish consumption following Hg discharge from a chloralkali plant. Prenatal exposure to MeHg is known to affect the neurodevelopment of fetuses and the retina is sensitive to neurodevelopmental damage. The multidisciplinary, cross-sectional Niibin study, developed with Grassy Narrows First Nations, included visual examinations with retinal evaluatio…

  • Visual Characteristics of Adults with Long-Standing History of Dietary Exposure to Mercury in Grassy Narrows First Nation, Canada

Open Access•Benoît Tousignant, Annie Chatillon et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Since the 1960s, Grassy Narrows First Nation (Ontario, Canada) has been exposed to methyl mercury (Hg) through fish consumption, resulting from industrial pollution of their territorial waters. This cross-sectional study describes the visual characteristics of adults with documented Hg exposure between 1970 and 1997. Oculo-visual examinations of 80 community members included visual acuity, automated visual fields, optical coherence tomography [OC…

  • SMS-based smartphone application for disease surveillance has doubled completeness and timeliness in a limited-resource setting – evaluation of a 15-week pilot program in Central African Republic (CAR…

    Open Access•Ziad El‐Khatib, Maya Shah et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2018

The app-based data transmission system more than doubled the completeness and timeliness of disease surveillance reports. This simple, low-cost intervention may permit the early detection of disease outbreaks in similar low-resource settings elsewhere

  • Maternal and neonatal health impact of obstetrical risk insurance scheme in Mauritania

Open Access•Aline Philibert, Marion Ravit et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2016•References: 30

A variety of health financing schemes shaped on pre-payment scheme have been implemented across Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) to address the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In Mauritania, the Obstetric Risk Insurance package (ORI) focusing on maternal and perinatal health has been progressively implemented at the health district level since 2002. Here, our main objective was to assess the effectiveness of the ORI in increasing facility-based deli…

  • The Hidden Costs of a Free Caesarean Section Policy in West Africa (Kayes Region, Mali)

Open Access•Marion Ravit, Aline Philibert et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2015

The fee exemption policy for EmONC in Mali aims to lower the financial barrier to care. The objective of the study was to evaluate the direct and indirect expenses associated with caesarean interventions performed in EmONC and the factors associated with these expenses. Data sampling followed the case control approach used in the large project (deceased and near-miss women). Our sample consisted of a total of 190 women who underwent caesarean int…

  • Birth Seasonality as a Response to a Changing Rural Environment (Kayes Region, Mali)

Open Access•Aline Philibert, Caroline Tourigny et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2013

Birth seasonality responds to a variety of environmental and socio-cultural factors. The present study was carried out to quantify the trends in seasonal variation in birth rate in seven districts in the Kayes region of Mali between 2007 and 2010 and to attempt to link climatic- and agricultural-cycle-dependent factors with birth seasonality. Lagged regression analysis based on time series analysis techniques was used to investigate seasonality o…

Open Access•Myriam Fillion, Aline Philibert et al.•ARTICLE•EcoHealth•2011

  • Visual acuity in fish consumers of the Brazilian Amazon

Open Access•Myriam Fillion, Mélanie Lemire et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2011

Objective To examine the associations between near and distant visual acuity and biomarkers of Hg, Pb, n -3 fatty acids and Se from the local diet of fish-eating communities of the Tapajós River in the Brazilian Amazon. Design Visuo-ocular health and biomarkers of Hg (hair, whole blood, plasma), Pb (whole blood), Se (whole blood and plasma) and n -3 fatty acids (plasma total phospholipids) were assessed in a cross-sectional study. Setting Lower T…

  • A Pleistocene diatomite from the western piedmont of Jebel Marra volcano, Darfur, western Sudan, and its hydrological and climatic significance

Open Access•Aline Philibert, John Tibby et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2010

  • An Exploratory Study of Diabetes in a First Nation Community with Respect to Serum Concentrations of p,p’-DDE and PCBs and Fish Consumption

Open Access•Aline Philibert, Harold Schwartz et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2009

This study examined the association between self-reported diabetes, fish consumption and serum levels of organochlorines in a First Nation community. One quarter of the 101 participants reported diabetes. Serum PCBs, but not p,p'-DDE, were positively correlated to consumption frequency of total fish, walleye and pike, but not trout. Reported diabetes was positively associated to p,p'-DDE and some PCB congeners. Odds Ratios (OR) for reported diabe…
