Racial Disparities in the Care of Patients with Type 1 Diabetes
Hurricanes Irma and Maria and Diabetes incidence in Puerto Rico
Increases in diabetes incidence, HOMA-IR and HbA1c were higher spanning the hurricanes compared to the pre-hurricanes period. The increase in diabetes incidence remains significant after adjusting for age and BMI
Estimating Covid-19 cases in Puerto Rico using an automated surveillance system
Due to concerns regarding limited testing and accuracy of estimation of COVID-19 cases, we created an automated surveillance system called “Puerto Rico Epidemiological Evaluation and Prevention of COVID-19 and Influenza” (PREPCOVI) to evaluate COVID-19 incidence and time trends across Puerto Rico. Automated text message invitations were sent to random phone numbers with Puerto Rican area codes. In addition to reported COVID-19 test results, we us…
Preparedness, hurricanes Irma and Maria, and impact on health in Puerto Rico
OBJECTIVES: Only few studies evaluated whether hurricane preparedness impacts health. The PREPARE study addresses this gap. METHODS: We recruited participants who had pertinent pre-hurricane data from the San Juan Overweight Adults Longitudinal Study (SOALS: n=364) and 125 patients with diabetes from Federally Qualified Health Center (COSSMA) in Puerto Rico. Participants aged 42-75 years completed interviews 20-34 months after Hurricanes Irma and…
Validation and reproducibility of a semi-quantitative FFQ as a measure of dietary intake in adults from Puerto Rico
Objective We aimed to assess the relative validity and reproducibility of a semi-quantitative FFQ in Puerto Rican adults. Design Participants completed an FFQ, followed by a 6 d food record and a second administration of the FFQ, 30 d later. All nutrients were log transformed and adjusted for energy intake. Statistical analyses included correlations, paired t tests, cross-classification and Bland–Altman plots. Setting Medical Sciences Campus, Uni…
Predicted vitamin D status and incidence of tooth loss and periodontitis
Objective Vitamin D insufficiency is highly prevalent, with particular subgroups at greater risk (e.g. the elderly and those with darker skin). Vitamin D insufficiency may partly explain US racial/ethnic disparities in the prevalence of periodontitis and tooth loss. We evaluated the association between a predictor score of plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and incidence of periodontitis and tooth loss. Design Detailed biennial questionnaires w…
Intakes of fruits, vegetables and carbohydrate and the risk of CVD
Background Low-carbohydrate diets could lead to reduced fruit and vegetable intake, which may be protective against CVD. The role of carbohydrate intake in modifying the association between fruits and vegetables and CVD has not been evaluated. Objective To evaluate whether carbohydrate intake affects the association between fruits and vegetables and CVD. Design We included participants from two large prospective studies, the Nurses’ Health Study …
Periodontal Disease among Adult, New‐Immigrant, Chinese Americans in Boston with and without Diabetes – A Brief Communication
Our preliminary data showed that mesial bone loss greater than 5 mm was correlated with inadequate control of diabetes. The implications and recommendations for the dental care of immigrant Chinese Americans with diabetes were discussed
Fruit and Vegetable Intake and Risk of Major Chronic Disease
BACKGROUND: Studies of fruit and vegetable consumption in relation to overall health are limited. We evaluated the relationship between fruit and vegetable intake and the incidence of cardiovascular disease and cancer and of deaths from other causes in two prospective cohorts. METHODS: A total of 71 910 female participants in the Nurses' Health study and 37,725 male participants in the Health Professionals' Follow-up Study who were free of major …
Problems in Exposure Assessment of Fluoride in Drinking Water
Researchers need to consider limitations of using a secondary data source to estimate fluoride in drinking water, particularly in studies where exposure to fluoride is the primary exposure of interest
Use of Preexisting Radiographs for Assessing Periodontal Disease in Epidemiologic Studies
Preexisting radiographs are feasible for use in epidemiologic studies and provide valid assessments of periodontal disease
The Association Between Tooth Loss and Coronary Heart Disease in Men and Women
This study showed a significant association between number of teeth at baseline and risk of coronary heart disease and the mechanisms to explain this association should be further clarified
The Relationship Between Amalgam Restorations and Mercury Levels in Male Dentists and Nondental Health Professionals
Objectives : The objectives of this study were: (1) to compare the mercury levels in general dentists with the mercury levels in other health professionals using toenail clippings as a biomarker, (2) to identify risk factors associated with high mercury levels, and (3) to compare practice characteristics of dentists with high and low mercury levels. Methods : A sample of 579 men was randomly selected from the 33,737 men participating in the Healt…
Validation of Self‐reported Periodontal Measures Among Health Professionals
Self-reports can provide discrimination and ranking information of cumulative periodontal disease among health professionals and can be used to provide valid results in etiologic studies in health professionals' populations
Validation of Self‐reported Oral Health Measures
Self-reports provide reasonably valid estimates for numbers of remaining teeth, fillings, root canal therapy, and fixed and removable prostheses. However, they appear to be less useful for the assessment of dental caries and periodontal disease in the two populations we have studied. There remains a need and potential to further develop self-report oral health measures that are valid for use in large population studies. Such self-report measures …
The Effect of Fruit and Vegetable Intake on Risk for Coronary Heart Disease
BACKGROUND: Many constituents of fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk for coronary heart disease, but data on the relationship between fruit and vegetable consumption and risk for coronary heart disease are sparse. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of fruit and vegetable consumption with risk for coronary heart disease. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: The Nurses' Health Study and the Health Professionals' Follow-Up Study. PAR…
Validity of a Self‐reported Periodontal Disease Measure
Dentists have a good perception of their periodontal status, and there is reasonable consensus among dentists regarding the threshold for defining periodontal disease. Self-reported measures might have potential for use in studies of other populations with substantial cost reduction, and deserve further evaluation
