  • The Making of Vulnerability. An ethnographic study exploring vulnerability in specialized outpatient care for pregnant persons with diabetes in Denmark

Open Access•Mette Mørup Schlütter, Helle Terkildsen Maindal et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2026

This article examines how vulnerability is enacted in specialized outpatient care for pregnant persons with diabetes in Denmark. The analysis draws on ten months of ethnographic fieldwork, including observations of 79 consultations with 33 pregnant persons and around 20 health professionals. Rather than treating vulnerability as a stable trait or individual circumstance, we approach it as something done through administrative classifications, psy…

  • Specialized Versus Standard Care After Pregnancy and Neonatal Loss: A Cohort Study

Open Access•Sofie Mørk, Natasia Hindsbak et al.•ARTICLE•OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying•2025

Pregnancy loss is a traumatic experience, and the quality of care can vary significantly across healthcare settings. However, evidence on the impact of different types of care on psychological outcomes is limited. This study examined the relationship between specialized care for parents experiencing pregnancy or neonatal loss and the level of Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms, as well as the role of…

  • Factors associated with nonparticipation and loss to follow-up in bereavement research using data from a cohort of parents with a loss in pregnancy or the neonatal period

Sofie Mørk, Søren Møller et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•2025•References: 3

Factors shaping participation in longitudinal cohorts may introduce bias, but there is a lack of research concerning participation patterns in cohorts of bereaved. Our aim was to study this in a longitudinal cohort of parents with a loss in pregnancy or during the neonatal period. Using data from the Danish national registers we identified all parents who experienced a pregnancy or neonatal loss in 2016-2018 and linked that with data on participa…

  • Continuing bonds in parents after a loss in pregnancy, or a death at or shortly after birth: A population-based study

Maria Birkegård Brintow, Christina Prinds et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 7

In this study, we describe continuing bonds and grief reactions and assess their association in 980 parents bereaved in pregnancy, at or shortly after birth. We found that most parents experienced continuing bonds. However, they differed by type of loss. Parents losing their child due to termination of pregnancy or miscarriage experienced bonds less frequently and had the least intense grief reaction. Parents losing their child postpartum experie…

  • Preconception Maternal Bereavement and Infant and Childhood Mortality: A Danish Population-Based Study

Quetzal A Class, Preben Bo Mortensen et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2015

OBJECTIVES: Preconception maternal bereavement may be associated with an increased risk for infant mortality, although these previously reported findings have not been replicated. We sought to examine if the association could be replicated and explore if risk extended into childhood. METHODS: Using a Danish population-based sample of offspring born 1979 to 2009 (N = 1,865,454), we analyzed neonatal (0-28 days), postneonatal infant (29-364 days), …

  • Does physical activity during pregnancy adversely influence markers of the metabolic syndrome in adult offspring? A prospective study over two decades

Inge Danielsen, Charlotta Granström et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2013•References: 24

BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether physical activity during pregnancy (PA) has long-term impact on the metabolic profile of the offspring. We investigated associations of PA with markers of the metabolic syndrome (MS) in 20y old offspring. METHODS: Longitudinal study where 965 pregnant women during 1988-1989 had four dimensions of PA assessed by questionnaires in gestation week 30: PA at work; leisure time PA, daily amount of walking-biking and sp…

  • PP26 Caesarean Delivery and Subsequent Birth Interval, Ectopic Pregnancy, Miscarriage or Stillbirth-a Danish Register-based Cohort Study

Sinéad M O’neill, Esben Agerbo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2013

Background Despite high caesarean delivery rates worldwide, limited data are available on the effect of a prior caesarean delivery on subsequent fertility. Aim To estimate the time to next birth and the risk of miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy and stillbirth in women with a prior caesarean delivery compared to women with a prior vaginal delivery. Methods Using Danish registry data we identified a cohort of women giving birth between 1982 and 2010 (…

  • Prenatal Stress and Risk of Asthma Hospitalization in the Offspring: A Swedish Population-Based Study

Ali S Khashan, Susanne Wicks et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2012

OBJECTIVE: Recent research suggested that maternal stress and anxiety increase the risk of asthma and eczema in the offspring. In this study, we aimed to study whether maternal exposure to death of a spouse or a child is associated with risk of asthma hospitalization in the offspring using a very large population-based cohort. METHODS: In a cohort of 3.2 million births in Sweden between January 1, 1973, and December 31, 2004, mothers were conside…

  • OP45 Caesarean Section and Subsequent Fetal Death: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    Open Access•SM O Neill, Patricia M Kearney et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2012

Background Spontaneous miscarriage (the death of a fetus before 20 weeks of pregnancy), occurs in 10–15% of recognised pregnancies. Stillbirth (the death of a fetus after 24 weeks of pregnancy), occurs in approximately one in every 200 deliveries. The cause of miscarriage and stillbirth is frequently unknown. However, there is some evidence to suggest that previous Caesarean delivery may be a risk factor. Objective: to compare the risk of fetal d…

  • O4-1.1 Neonatal conditions and autism spectrum disorders

Open Access•Hjördís Ósk Atladóttir, Tine Brink Henriksen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011

Background Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are disorders of neural development characterised by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behaviour. Only few previous studies have investigated neonatal conditions and the risk for ASDs. Objectives To use Danish population based sample and register based information to investigate whether neonatal conditions are associated to the later development of ASD. Meth…

  • Sports and Leisure Time Physical Activity During Pregnancy in Nulliparous Women

Open Access•Hanne Kristine Hegaard, Peter Damm et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2010

  • Do inattention and hyperactivity symptoms equal scholastic impairment? evidence from three European cohorts

    Open Access•Alina Rodríguez, Marjo‐riitta Järvelin et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2007

These results extend previous reports of scholastic impairment among children with clinically diagnosed ADHD to non-referred population samples from three European countries. Surveillance policies should be implemented in school systems to catch children in need of behavioral or scholastic support early
