The Unique Extended Selection Cohorts Design for the Evaluation of the School-Based Jump-In Intervention on Dietary Habits: A Study Protocol
Background : To promote healthy dietary and physical activity behaviour among primary school children, the city of Amsterdam structurally implements the school-based Jump-in intervention in over half of its primary schools. Previously shown to be effective in stimulating physical activity and outside recess play, our study is the first to evaluate Jump-in's effect on children's dietary behaviour. Evaluating the effectiveness and implementation pr…
Ethnicity and socioeconomic status are related to dietary patterns at age 5 in the Amsterdam born children and their development (ABCD) cohort
This study indicates that both ethnicity and SES are relevant for dietary patterns at age 5 and may enable more specific nutrition education to specific ethnic and low socioeconomic status target groups
Seven-year time trends in energy balance-related behaviours according to educational level and ethnic background among 14-year-old adolescents
Objective To assess seven-year time trends in energy balance-related behaviours in 14-year-old adolescents living in an urban area and to examine the influence of educational level and ethnicity on these time trends. Design Second grade students (mean age 13·6 years) filled in questionnaires about the energy balance-related behaviours of breakfast consumption, fruit and vegetable consumption, physical activity and screen-time behaviour from schoo…
Mother's education and the risk of preterm and small for gestational age birth: A DRIVERS meta-analysis of 12 European cohorts
Screen time and cardiometabolic function in Dutch 5–6 year olds: Cross-sectional analysis of the ABCD-study
We found no convincing evidence for an association between TV or PC time and cardiometabolic function in apparently healthy 5-6 yr olds
Racial/ethnic and immigrant differences in early childhood diet quality
Objective To assess racial/ethnic differences in the diet in young children and the explanatory role of maternal BMI, immigrant status and perception of child's weight. Design Among white, black and Hispanic 3-year-olds, we used negative binomial and linear regression to examine associations of race/ethnicity with foods and nutrients assessed by a validated FFQ. Setting Project Viva, Boston (MA), USA. Subjects Children aged 3 years ( n 898). Resu…
Maternal cell phone and cordless phone use during pregnancy and behaviour problems in 5-year-old children
BACKGROUND: A previous study found an association between maternal cell phone use during pregnancy and maternal-reported child behaviour problems at age 7. Together with cell phones, cordless phones represent the main exposure source of radiofrequency-electromagnetic fields to the head. Therefore, we assessed the association between maternal cell phone and cordless phone use during pregnancy and teacher-reported and maternal-reported child behavi…
Maternal Early-Pregnancy Vitamin D Status Is Associated With Maternal Depressive Symptoms in the Amsterdam Born Children and Their Development Cohort
Socioeconomic inequalities in lipid and glucose metabolism in early childhood in a population-based cohort: The ABCD-Study
The socioeconomic gradient in cardiovascular risk factors seems to emerge in early childhood. In absence of underlying mechanisms these empirical findings are relevant for public health care and further explanatory research
OP62 The Influence of Prenatal Maternal and Paternal Anxiety and Depression on Cardiovascular Biomarkers in the Child at age 10: Findings from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSP…
Background The aim of the current study was to investigate whether exposure to prenatal maternal anxiety and depression influenced later offspring glucose, lipid and inflammatory markers via intrauterine mechanisms. Methods Data from a prospective birth cohort based in the South West of England were used. Our analysis included 2839 mother-children duos and 2361 father-child duos for outcomes assessed at mean age 9.9 years (non-fasting cholesterol…
Overweight at age two years in a multi-ethnic cohort (ABCD study): The role of prenatal factors, birth outcomes and postnatal factors
Turkish and Moroccan children in the Netherlands have 2- to 3-fold higher odds for being overweight at age 2 years, which is largely attributed to maternal pre-pregnancy BMI and weight gain during the first 6 months of life. Further study on the underlying factors of this early weight gain is required to tackle ethnic differences in overweight among these children
Validation of self-reported folic acid use in a multiethnic population: Results of the Amsterdam Born Children and their Development study
Objective To assess folic acid supplementation rates and validate the self-reporting of folic acid supplement use among pregnant women in a multiethnic cohort. Design Secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study. Setting Self-reported folic acid supplement use in the Amsterdam Born Children and their Development study cohort was compared with serum folate concentrations using non-parametric trend analysis and linear and logistic regression. S…
Comparison of growth between native and immigrant infants between 0–3 years from the Dutch ABCD cohort
Most remarkable differences were found in the BMI and weight measurements for age charts. Especially girls from mothers born in Turkey and Morocco had an increasingly heavier weight for their age than girls from mothers born in the Netherlands
Cardio-metabolic risk in 5-year-old children prenatally exposed to maternal psychosocial stress: The ABCD study
Main strengths of the proposed study are the longitudinal measurements during three important periods (pregnancy, infancy and childhood), the extensive measurement of maternal psychosocial stress with validated questionnaires and the thorough measurement of the children's cardio-metabolic profile. The availability of several confounding factors will give us the opportunity to quantify the independent contribution of maternal stress during pregnan…
First-Trimester Working Conditions and Birthweight: A Prospective Cohort Study
Objectives. We investigated the relationship between women's first-trimester working conditions and infant birthweight. Methods. Pregnant women (N = 8266) participating in the Amsterdam Born Children and Their Development study completed a questionnaire gathering information on employment and working conditions. After exclusions, 7135 women remained in our analyses. Low birthweight and delivery of a small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infant were the…
