On the sidelines of conspiracy
The Middle East has often been described as a hot-bed for conspiracy theories and conspiracy theorists. In Iraqi Kurdistan, this is not immediately recognizable. Struggle beyond tragedy
This article explores why supporters of the Kurdish Freedom Movement give their offspring to guerillas, despite parents' knowledge of the likely violent death this can entail. Drawing on extended fieldwork in Iraqi Kurdistan, the article argues that the answer can be found in the lived ideology of the movement, where those who are killed are not seen as tragic figures who shatter social worlds. Engaging with state-centric perspectives on sovereignty, and particularly Giorgio Agamben's work, this article argues that despite sovereignty's permanence at the level of the state, the principles upon which it is built can change dramatically. Reflecting on personal experiences from conducting fieldwork in Iraqi and Turkish Kurdistan between 2015 and 2017, the article supplements existing literature on how to navigate dangerous fieldwork by considering the limits of trust with regards to estimating safety, and the necessity of learning local definitions of danger.
