  • Worldwide trends in hypertension prevalence and progress in treatment and control from 1990 to 2019: A pooled analysis of 1201 population-representative studies with 104 million participants

    Open Access•Bin Zhou, Rodrigo M Carrillo-Larco et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2021

BACKGROUND: Hypertension can be detected at the primary health-care level and low-cost treatments can effectively control hypertension. We aimed to measure the prevalence of hypertension and progress in its detection, treatment, and control from 1990 to 2019 for 200 countries and territories. METHODS: We used data from 1990 to 2019 on people aged 30-79 years from population-representative studies with measurement of blood pressure and data on blo…

  • Height and body-mass index trajectories of school-aged children and adolescents from 1985 to 2019 in 200 countries and territories: A pooled analysis of 2181 population-based studies with 65 million p…

    Open Access•Andrea Rodriguez-Martinez, Andrea Rodriguez‐Martinez et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2020

BACKGROUND: Comparable global data on health and nutrition of school-aged children and adolescents are scarce. We aimed to estimate age trajectories and time trends in mean height and mean body-mass index (BMI), which measures weight gain beyond what is expected from height gain, for school-aged children and adolescents. METHODS: For this pooled analysis, we used a database of cardiometabolic risk factors collated by the Non-Communicable Disease …

  • Body Mass Index (BMI) and Work Ability in Older Workers: Results from the Health and Employment after Fifty (Heaf) Prospective Cohort Study

Open Access•Cathy Linaker, Catherine H Linaker et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

This study explores associations between BMI and prolonged sickness absence; cutting down at work; and health-related job loss (HRJL) over two years of follow-up among workers aged ≥50 years. A cohort of 2299 men and 2425 women (aged 50-64 years) self-reported height and weight at baseline and provided information about work ability at 12 and 24 months for the Health and Employment after Fifty (HEAF) Study. Associations between BMI and work abili…

  • Understanding poor health behaviours as predictors of different types of hospital admission in older people: Findings from the Hertfordshire Cohort Study

Holly E Syddall, Holly Syddall et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 25

BACKGROUND: Rates of hospital admission are increasing, particularly among older people. Poor health behaviours cluster but their combined impact on risk of hospital admission among older people in the UK is unknown. METHODS: 2997 community-dwelling men and women (aged 59-73) participated in the Hertfordshire Cohort Study (HCS). We scored (from 0 to 4) number of poor health behaviours engaged in at baseline (1998-2004) out of: current smoking, hi…

  • Association of adult height and leg length with fasting plasma cortisol concentrations: Evidence for an effect of normal variation in adrenocortical activity on growth

    Open Access•D I W Phillips, Holly E Syddall et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2008

We have evaluated the relationship between activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and adult height in adults recruited from the UK Hertfordshire Cohort Study. In a sample of 1,354 individuals, we found that height fell by 0.67 cm (95% CI 0.34-1.0) per SD (114 nmol/l) increase in fasting plasma cortisol concentrations. The association was continuous across the range of cortisol concentrations and was independent of the levels of…

  • Specific associations of insulin resistance with impaired health-related quality of life in the Hertfordshire Cohort Study
