SP4-15 Building research capacity in developing countries-cost effectiveness of an epidemiology course taught by traditional and video-teleconferencing methods in Pakistan
Building research capacity in developing countries using cost-effective methods has been recognised as an important pillar for the production of a sound evidence base for decision-making in policy and practice. We assessed the effectiveness of a research training course using traditional as well as video-teleconference method in Pakistan. A 9-day epidemiology research training course was offered to physicians in Pakistan (92%) and Bangladeshis (8…
O4-5.1 Telepreventive medicine as the future of epidemiology and disease prevention
The problem of chronic disease around the world can be improved only through the means of prevention. Effective prevention of chronic disease cannot be achieved without what we call “Telepreventive Medicine.” The fundamental underlying concept is that information about disease prevention should be distributed using inexpensive Internet pathways. The birth of the discipline started a few years ago and has been recognised in the The British Medical…
Estimating the lesbian population

Accurate estimates are critical in order to meet lesbian’s healthcare needs and to address health problems that may be more prevalent among them. This study used capture-recapture methods to estimate the lesbian population of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Design: Mailing lists from four sources were used to iden…
Dog bite incidence in the city of Pittsburgh
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to estimate the number of dog bite injuries occurring in the city of Pittsburgh in 1993. METHODS: The capture-recapture method was used, along with long-linear modeling. Three sources were used to identify victims hospital reports, animal control reports, and police/victim reports. RESULTS: In 1993, 790 dog bites were reported. The capture-recapture method estimated that there were 1388 unreported dog bit…
Perforating eye injury in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania
From 1980 through 1986, acute perforating eye injury (ICD codes 871.0-871.9) was diagnosed in 345 residents of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. The mean incidence rate was 3.49 per 100,000 person years. There was no significant change in incidence over the seven-year period. The largest number of injuries occurred among individuals working with tools, of which 47 percent were occupational. Males had a 6.5-fold risk of injury relative to females. B…
