Enhancing Pragmatic Language skills for Young children with Social communication difficulties (E-PLAYS-2) trial
v1.1 19th June 2023
How young, disadvantaged fathers are affected by socioeconomic and relational barriers
This article is based on the interviews of nine young, socially disadvantaged fathers from the UK. Young fathers are more likely to experience socioeconomic deprivation and disrupted pathways towards parenthood, which affect their participation in socially accepted trajectories of ‘father involvement’. Whilst this has received some attention in research, studies have largely neglected to examine the lived experiences of such fathers directly. The…
Developmental associations between victimization and body mass index from 3 to 10 years in a population sample
In the current prospective study, we investigated (1) whether high and low BMI in early childhood puts a child at risk of victimization by their peers, and (2) whether being victimized increases BMI over the short- and long-term, independent of the effect of BMI on victimization. We also examined whether gender moderated these prospective associations. Participants were 1,344 children who were assessed yearly from ages 3 to 10 years as part of th…
The Relationship between Bullying Roles and Children's Everyday Dyadic Interactions
This study investigated the behaviour and communication of seven‐ to eight‐year‐old children during a dyadic computer task. The children participating were identified by peers as: (1) initiators of bullying (‘bullies’); (2) defenders of those victimised (‘defenders’); and (3) those who generally do not take on a consistent role in relation to bullying (‘non‐role’ children). Children were videotaped during the task and the interaction was coded, 3…
Gender Differences in Verbal Communication between Popular and Unpopular Children During an Interactive Task
This study investigated gender differences in communication effectiveness between popular and unpopular 5‐ to 7‐year‐old children. Because previous research suggests that there may be gender differences in how popular and unpopular children communicate with each other, 24 same‐gender pairs (each containing a popular and an unpopular child) were videotaped playing a game. Communication effectiveness was assessed by measuring the incidence of forms…
Growth of children and socioeconomic status of Mexican‐American farmworker families in Tulare County, California
Comparison of the size of Mexican‐American children from two samples of farmworker families living in Tulare County, one drawn in 1969 (24 families with 52 children 0–7 years old), the other in 1989 (95 families with 226 children 0–9 years old) reveals a parallel improvement in total family income and physical growth. However, children in families with incomes below 70% of the poverty line in 1989 showed generally lower Z‐scores in weight for age…
